You could consider Cyclone if you want to directly beat on stuff. But sooner or later, the need to get in close, and the time required to take down big stuff will likely do you in. But it is fun while it lasts.

I'm currently using a minion build (on Xbox) - cuts down on the aiming frustrations and allows you to concentrate on staying alive (Witch).

I just ran cyclone pm my marauder. You're exactly right. He was great until about act 8. Then he would just get melted at every boss fight.

There are Cyclone builds out there that will get you well past the Acts. One of the issues is that you probably need a fairly advanced tree before Cyclone starts to hum and early levelling requires use of another skill. But from my stand point the ultimate road block is because you need to be in close, you also need to know all the signs of when a Boss is about to unleash Death upon you. (And of course your defences need to up to snuff and you'll want some really good source(s) of Health re-filling.)
I now comment in Forums with my Xbox account:

Melee does fine.

Not on PS4 it doesn't. I made it halfway through the Coast as a melee shadow, just a test really. It feels REALLY bad with a controller. I was air-swinging half the time. And that's while trying to manage flasks and positioning.

If you insist on playing PoE with a controller, you would best be served treating it like a shooting game.

Lvl 60 SSF HC Gladiator. Melee works fine with a controller.

I look at it like that old temperature sensation demonstration (lukewarm water seems cool on the hand if your hand was last in hot water, and warm if your hand was last in cold water). I made my transition to Console on D3 and got used to many of Console's idiosyncrasies with that game. Moving on to POE on Xbox felt like a definition step up. My observation of players coming to POE on Console directly from POE on PC is that they often see it as a step down. I like to think of it as POE on Console being more challenging than POE on PC.
