Jocks, Nerds & Burn-outs : a POE (MMO/ARPG in general) sociological analysis

Absolutely great read. If I were you I'd send it in to some game mags and maybe get it published.

<-- Burn out/nerd.
Im casual but I like myself and the people I am with to have a well thought out build.

When I get in a group and there is a guy with zombies running around, or a guy using poison arrow (decimates fps in a group) or again someone with no hp and terrible damage, I get annoyed. Forums are here to be read, games are here to be mastered, your job in a group is to do what you do (in this games case, lots of pew pew while not dying) to the best of your ability.

I dont consider myself elitist or anything like that, but in MMO/multiplayer games you run across people running with terrible builds doing their job extremely poorly, and when it gets pointed out they just say "I dont care im a casual player". So everyone else should work extra hard to carry you through the content, that would be impossible for a group with the skills/ect as you to do?

This is one of the things I love about hardcore in this game. People who dont want to learn how to play are usually not playing in HC. Even in softcore, this game is not ezmode so if your build is pathetic you usually aren't making it to endgame.

On topic, I dont fit any one description but have traits of all 3. I like to make my own build, but it is foolish to not use other peoples hard work as a stepping stone. I check out other peoples builds for a given style, figure out ways to improve it or personalize it to play how I want, and then roll my char.
I fall into none of the OP's three character types. For I am an anti-social gamer that plays for enjoyment only. I don't care what other people have or what level they are, if they play HC or not. I am the 'Casual Gamer'. I want a fun challenging game. That's all folks. Come better weather and getting off the over-night shift, i will spend a great deal more time tending to my home and property. And my boat.
Fun post pink, quite amusing to read :)

I dont really know what category i am in, i would asume some of all 3 because,

I like to come up with unique builds(that are viable lategame xD),i like to give away items i dont need for no benefit of my own(just to aid other hero's in there quest for wraeclast domination)and i like to play both team/solo style, i must admit i like a team to be organized but if not i just adjust my own playstyle.

Is there a "englightened gamer" option? :o), basicly i play for the fun of other people in the hopes they return the fun :), and like magic this always works in any game i play, i help other people with what i can and usualy they return the favor without me asking for it,
thats a trully enlightened gaming experience.

GG(g) on all, and coolest post in quite some time pink

I was actually going to have the title be: Jocks, Nerds, Burn-outs & Preppies
but I got fried out while writing and dropped the last. Although 4 classifications do not encapsulate all the stereotypes, it helped a bit.

The Preppies are the support class minded people who always gravitate toward group play and always take on a support role as healer/buffer. They appear selfless and philanthropic for the most part, but they can easily have a snarky dark side prone towards elitism and are quick to judge who is trashy and pedestrian versus who is acceptable.

i think i would be a preppy without a dark side xD cuse i help casual's, i answer there questions and help them in any way that i can(with items if i can ore with knowledge ore strategy's) and i would consider myself the best form of suport this game has to offer MELEE.
best way to heal other hero's in this game is to soak up the damage ore yelling CHARGE before u run into a battle sacrificing ure hero for the party xD.

I'm a burn-out, but it has nothing to do with the way I play PoE or MMOs or MOBAs.

It has everything to do with what I partake in a few moments BEFORE I log into PoE... ;)

Yeah.
There is that element as well in all three, but I wanted it to be subtle.

Jocks/alcohol
Burn-outs/blaze
Nerds/energy drink

Viva la stereotype!

Welp I tried hard to be a nerd, but my unique builds suck and i'm not technically very good at the game so ended up slavishly following an 'OP cookie cutter build' so I suppose in that regard I fall into the Jock category although I feel i'm a little mix of jock/burn-out with nerdy aspirations. I think I just a had some existentialist epiphany thank you.
What's the stereotype name for someone who:

Dies on a regular basis, complains the game is too hard, buys all their gear, tries to sell their gear for real money, uses parties to defeat all bosses but normally solos with alts, then finally quits to go and do the same thing in the next new game without ever completing this one?
