Jocks, Nerds & Burn-outs : a POE (MMO/ARPG in general) sociological analysis

That is a very interesting milieu-study right there. I would really appreciate it if you could share your methodological approach and provide some of your data. I would love to read some of the interviews you have made (in case you took a qualitytive approach) or look into the statistics on which you based your categories (but I don´t think you took a quantitative way).

As already pointed out, I also think you are, like most milieu-type studies, focussing mainly on the extreme ends (and in this regard only in a single aspect, ie. the hardcore players in contrast to let´s say trading enthusiasts). There need to be much more overlapping and in-between categories. Maybe you could implement some kind of scaling, like Bordieu did with that classic chart of social and economic capital. This would also allow to include people that are playing on the lower-end of itemization and game-content while still being, at least towards themselves, very serious about their characters and their respective developement.

Definitely good stuff.

Thanks for some entertainment in the morning. Nothing like relishing a cup of fresh coffee while reading a sociological analysis on gaming.

Cheers

All that we need to remember from my analysis is the fact that there most likely is someone named "YourMUMz69" out there.

Isnt this just a rehash or the "Jimmy, Tommy and Spike" gamer personalities?

Ive seen at least 2 on POE already; theres another one by brother laz (he designed most of POE's uniques)

Funny how no one ever reads the very last post on the preceding page.

But I'm actually curious to see the PoE one by Laz; I'm also surprised he designed most of PoE's uniques, since I was thinking many didn't fare well by his standards.
When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted.

A lot of his uniques arnt here yet... They got shelved because GGG has more pressing issues as well as balance and user uniques
(Users share some of the blame for current bad uniques)

Items to come:
I am most closely the Burn-Out. I do not "roleplay" per-se, but I like a character that...Feels right. I don't think a marauder should EVER be throwing ice spears.
Burn-out that loves archetypes? Yup that's me.

Thanks for the interesting read.

For some reason, this reminds me of the unified classification in diablo 3, "the losers".
would anyone ever admit to actually being a card carrying Jock?

seriously

In all other aspects of life, jock vibe people are actually proud of their "good 'ol fashioned, down home, one the boys" mentality and don't mind having the bumper stickers on their cars to prove it*. (*see mud-flaps with silhouette of big breasted vixen)

But I wonder if my described Jock, and we know they are a plenty, would fess up to it and say "yeah...I go with what is known to be the best and I am a bit vapid... thank you very much"

Felt very left out when I couldn't quite fit myself in to the classifications D=
That said I know a friend who fits the Burn-out archetype EXACTLY. He hits every one of the points mentioned =p

The hybridization post was interesting, but still can't quite figure out where I am in terms of the classifications =( Leaning towards nerd-jock.. but might have traces of burnout? =S

or *gasp* does this make me.. a healthy balanced gamer? =D.. yeah, probably not =p
I'm sure there are a tonne of casual players that don't fit in any of those 3 categories...

I would consider myself casual. I play this game along with many others.

Maybe a little bit of a jock as I like PvP, but then I also madea new character just for PvE... yeah don't fit into any of them.
The rest of the 'end-game' content will be available along with a heap of new stuff when the game launches in a few months time. From what I've seen it's going to be awesome. - Michael_GGG
