Don't use a guide to start with, or you won't learn what you need to know.

The large number of offensive passives on the skill web are a trap. Put most of your points in Life or ES. You will need more from your equipment as well.

The game assumes you have maxed elemental resists, or you want to die a lot.

You will need a movement skill.

Don't try to tank anything.
