NEW PLAYER, Should i play Path Of Exiles?
|
I personally really like the way the game looks and i've been playing wow, diablo, starcraft etc, etc, etc, all my life and thought maybe i should try this game. I also tend to only play one character in all of these games, for example i play a shaman in wow for 11 something years or atleast since Vanilla never leveled another to max, i only play zerg in startcraft and i played a Barbarian in all Diablo games i played. I don't like changing character i'm sure you understand.
Now that being said, when i started looking into the game itself HOLY CRAP, i love min maxing characters and making the best character i possibly can hens why i never switch characters but damn, to level a character as a new player having no idea what you're doing only to have to make a new character because there is no respec in the game because you're new and fu*ked us is very harsh in my eyes, i know there is some small reespecs and such but i also hear it's impossible to do a complete respec except in between patches when you get a free full respec. I feel i need to make a build and follow that build before i start playing the game, also being completely new to the game and having no idea what gear, stats, spells are good is really crippling me in that area. I also dislike the idea of having to create a character that is doomed to be mediocre or atleast not minmaxed for end game just to learn how to make a good character. essentially i want to play one character, i feel forced to either learn all there is about the game before playing or not enjoy the game the first time i play it because i know i will fail on that first character. So... any advice? or should i just stay the hell away? Last edited by elimod#3229 on Dec 26, 2018, 7:09:22 PM Last bumped on Dec 27, 2018, 9:42:55 PM

You will only know if you try. But be warned. You will need a lot of patience and you will have to do a lot of research, read guides etc if you want to do end content and be able to min/max your char. That's why for starters follow build guides char you would like to play. And there is a way respec but to certain extent. If you picked Witch to play you cannot switch to Assassin but you can respec everything within Witch skill tree, for a price. That price can be too high if you are high level and need to change most of skill points so it makes more sense to just power level new char.
POE Wiki is a must have guide for everything poe related and check this forum for builds and pick one you would like to try. Last edited by Sidad#4699 on Dec 26, 2018, 7:25:49 PM

As long as you get life on most pieces, and you get life nodes on the tree, you can't really brick your character.
Just figure out what you like to play, and follow a build. There is nothing wrong with copying a build from the class forums for your first character. And that way you cant really mess it up. When you figure out the game and how it works, then you can start making your own builds. But there is nothing wrong with just following a build guide for your first character. You said you played barb, I have a feeling you would like a cyclone character. They are basically a Whirlwind barb. There are a few different versions scattered on the forums. Dont let the skill-tree scare you its just passives. The only way people screw their characters up is getting too many damage nodes and not getting life nodes. There is a reason this game is called Path of Life Nodes. Outside of life nodes and keystones, the skill tree doesn't account for as much of your character's power as his skills and gear does. The biggest issue all new players make, is grabbing damage nodes and having a character who can't take a hit and flops over all the time. And even within the builds you copy, there are variations for you to tweak later when you have more of it figured out. I'd just go grab me a guide with a skill I like the look of, copy it to a T, learn the game and the tree, then you can branch out. I wouldn't wing it. |

Really depends on what that type of "new player" is. If hes a grinder, nolifer, hyperjuicer, enter name of people that play all day long then this game would definitely fit the mold. If hes a casual with not much time then good god no. Really comes down to the players personality.
Now the other part of it to where it makes it much more enjoyable/easier are the cash shop items. Sure you can play the game without buying anything but the QOL of the currency/map/etc stash tabs for a grinder are a must. All my friends played D2 back in the day, and a lot so if one of them where to ask me about this game I would just tell them to stay away. It was a time where you could create a toon, get pled to a decent farm level and you could be on your way. Which we did quite often, and it was fun making new toons to see which builds would work with stats and gear so rerolling was easy and fun. This game on the other hand if you don't enjoy your current toon, guess what, you have to start all the way over and do it all again. Last edited by ZeuZLoD#0684 on Dec 26, 2018, 8:07:28 PM

If you want Chris Wilson to own your soul, start playing this game.
If you don't want to lose your soul, stay away from this game. I'm serious and not joking. Last edited by coatofarms#2347 on Dec 26, 2018, 8:14:50 PM

The answer is both yes and no.
If you have lots of money and can spend at least $480 to buy Core supporter packs in order to get storage tabs for storing gear and items, then it is yes. Otherwise, it is no. 34pre98qua

"` Who the hell is Chris Wilson, also is this your way of telling me if i play the game ill be hooked? |

" I played Black Desert online some time ago and spent about 2000 dollars on that game so yes, i do have the money. " Although i do work to make that money so this comment has be concerned :( Trust me, i've got as little life outside of my work as any self respecting nerd but ill keep my gaming to the end of the day or the weekends. |

" Chris Wilson is the head of GGG. He created PoE with his friends from his parent's garage. And yes, you'll likely be hooked. But that's not necessarily a bad thing b/c GGG cares about this game and is constantly putting out new content, making sure the game stays fresh and better over time. It's actually a great investment to start learning how to play PoE if you are looking for a video game that will stay relevant for years if not decades. And the whole "owning your soul" thing is an inside joke. Chris has a quote from a few years ago where he said that when players get to the PoE end-game "we own their soul". " He is the incarnation of Jesus. And yes, the game is like cocaine. I also like to stick to similar playstyles I did before, except if there's something that just clicks and feels very good. That said there's a different baseline and min-max cap for every build, as well as things they are good for. If I have more time to play a league I'll pick an expensive one, otherwise stick to stuff that can work on zero budget. Last edited by krenderke#3861 on Dec 26, 2018, 8:38:11 PM
