AI can generate portaits indistinguishable from real human faces. what does this mean?

I don't see it's alarming. If we know about it, won't we just require better proof than our own eyes looking at a video? People already believe dumb stuff, is it that people are worried the gullible masses will buy into fake instructions? Uh... advertising?

Hey, lets bring back Alec Guinness! I figure we could do some new bruce lee films with this.

Oh and we could render the adult industry obsolete.

Well, the need for humans to do the work, yes.

I'm not sure how I feel about new Bruce Lee movies. You realise there would quickly be Bruce Lee porn movies.

Hmm, the wrongness of that aside, I will think about it.

Makes me think no-one is wanting to have a human replace Hatsune Miku.

BearCares' dev thread had me thinking, and it's more appropriate here rather than in his diary space:

[in response to the thread there]

I can imagine looking at code screenies is far more enjoyable for those who understand, but I still like looking at them because of what they represent.
There's enough in common with the code programmers use to talk to the computer and the language you use to communicate with us to make the concept relatable. The points of difference are interesting, too. I wonder whether when AIs start communicating there will be a growth in languages to counterbalance thought diversity of the loss of so many human languages in the past few hundred years.

“We think that if we slowly increase the complexity of their environment and the range of actions the agents themselves are allowed to take, it’s possible they’ll create an expressive language which contains concepts beyond the basic verbs and nouns that evolved here,” said the researchers.

In a way, the experiment seems to imitate the human experience very well. Faced with many tasks needed for survival, humans had to learn how to cooperate and had to develop some kind of common language to make it possible. Now it appears machines evolving their own languages aren’t far behind.

article, 2017. Must be more happened since.

Just updated to Word 2007 from 2000. Now, when I download assignments from my Prof from college site, they are in Word Pad, and Word Pad opens them to...hieroglyphics! Why is this happening? How can I correct it so that I complete my assignments? I CAN open them in FreeFile opener, but can't do anything with them there unless I pay $$$$ to subscribe, and I am a poor college student. HELP, please!

That's a bit of a silly question the Internet doesn't weigh anything!
Subtle plug for The IT Crowd. Starts slow but worth sticking with. So good.

I'm definitely more Jen than Moss if that wasn't already obvious, ha.

Imagine living in a world where you simply can't know whether anything is real unless you invest a considerable amount of time and effort to find out. Now in that same world, you're getting bombarded with new information all day every day. What are you gonna do?

You seen any of Black Mirror?

If not, get through a few of the better ones (you can find them ranked online; the same ones tend to be in the top 10). They are (except for San Junipero) bleak and disturbing, but so much food for thought.

An oblique answer, I know.

White Christmas

That's my favorite episode of Black Mirror, too. Absolutely horrifying.

Not mine though, I don't have a favourite ep.

We all only live once. So we are obligated to make good use of the time that we have and to do something that is meaningful and satisfying. This is something that I find meaningful and satisfying... I enjoy helping people who are vulnerable. And I enjoy crushing bastards.

why would you need this technology to do this?

it already works, just lying is enough. no need for complex videos etc. just look around a bit in this world.

i agree with you that it's already happening, of course it is. technology like this will certainly exacerbate the problem.

No, it will only be another one in a long row of tools for liars. These videos can be disproven within minutes. same as with manipulated photos. The problem already exists. Even after showing that the evidence is fake people won't care.

You fear the masses won't know whats wrong and whats right? I already know that the greatest problem is that people don't want to invest time to find out whats wrong and whats right. No new technology will change that. It wont get worse, we already hit the bottom. Believe is already taking precedence over facts.

OpenAI made a text generator AI and they're not releasing it because it might be too convincing. As for an example:

The writing prompt:

A train carriage containing controlled nuclear materials was stolen in Cincinnati today. Its whereabout are unknown.

The AI wrote:

"
The incident occurred on the downtown train line, which runs from Covington and Ashland stations.
In an email to Ohio news outlets, the U.S. Department of Energy said it is working with the Federal Railroad Administration to find the thief.

"The theft of this nuclear material will have significant negative consequences on public and environmental health, our workforce and the economy of our nation," said Tom Hicks, the U.S. Energy Secretary, in a statement. "Our top priority is to secure the theft and ensure it doesn't happen again."

The stolen material was taken from the University of Cincinnati's Research Triangle Park nuclear research site, according to a news release from Department officials.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission did not immediately release any information.
According to the release, the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Security is leading that team's investigation.

"The safety of people, the environment and the nation's nuclear stockpile is our highest priority," Hicks said. "We will get to the bottom of this and make no excuses."

I said dang yo.
