No, they get their value relative to the amount of botters and flippers. Nothing more, nothing less.

If you want to argue p2w look at premium tabs and trade. It is the worst system since gaming. I dare to say even D3 wasn't as shit.
Edit: and in a way tabs in general. Imagine crafting /trading without a (currency) tab pre delve. Lol. Before you argue "it's just QoL", so would loot pets be. You could still pick up everything by hand.

For me though it would be enough if multiples of the same currency would drop stacked. Or some kind of area pickup for multiples of the same kind.

Heh, I like giving pets some utility, and while I don't agree with them auto-picking up currency (would prefer simply stacking same type of drops in a radius, especially from strongboxes or various enemies that tend to drop the same type of currency ONLY in a single piece stack) - and I do enjoy Torchlight I/II - simply having the pet highlight dangerous enemies, with a couple of selections based on the Bestiary Encyclopedia would be sufficient to actually make me cherish them a lot more...

Pets should also have the utility of highlighting less than 10 monsters remaining, if the old Tora compass was/is too difficult to be implemented.

Heck, even highlighting breakables would be a great use for the pets...

They need a "real" purpose, but just like with most of PoE, TencentGGG seem to "miss that sweetpoint by a landslide"...

OT: I'd love autopickup, configurable in the item filter. But not via a pet.

For the bragging right, obviously. Just like an expensive watch. Why pay 10k$ for a Rolex if a 10$ plastic digiwatch is super accurate and waterproof? To show you can. Besides, people buy supporter packs actually to "pay for" the fun they had, out of fairness if they can afford it. (I bet only very few and pretty rich people actually buy 350 points specifically to get that pet)
It's a good way for GGG to let people show they supported the game development.
