As a veteran D2 player, should I join PoE on December 7?

Hey guys,

I played Diablo 2 for many years and hundreds of hours, however it seems like we won’t get Diablo 2 remastered for a long time and I did not like Diablo 3 when it came out, so I thought: should I try Path of Exile (PoE)?

Could you comment on some of my questions?

1) Do you believe PoE is worse, equal or better than D2? Why?

Do you believe it’s a good RPG in general?
Do you find it a good ARPG?
Is it fun in the first 50 hours?

Is it still fun after 300 hours? In other words, do you enjoy endgame PvE content and endgame PvP?

Should I join on the ladder reset of December 7th for the new content and the fresh experience?

2) Late-game PvP is important for me because of the way I play: I build a few PvE characters able to provide everything that my PvP character needs so that my PvP character can focus on duels (after reaching the endgame content in PvE).

How does PoE’s PvP compares to D2’s PvP? Do you find it better?

Is PvP fun in PoE?

Is PvP fair and balanced?

Is there some kind of rated 1v1 PvP?

Are there problems like hacks/desync charge hammerdin?

3) How many active PoE players are there? How many of them on PC?

Steam says around 21 000 to 96 000 players actively play PoE on a weekly basis (varies a lot through the last 12 months).

However, I hear that there are other platforms that people play PoE on PC so that they are not counted in Steam total? Where are they?

Are there sufficient PC players in the eastern USA/Canada time zone to be fun?

4) How would you rate the PoE community? Is it as friendly as the D2 community? I have heard PoE has wide open arms for all ex-Blizzard fans following the Diablo Immortal disaster?

5) I have seen some comments around the web that PoE is a fast patching / fast changing game and that your preferred build may be nerfed so hard that it may become useless. Is that an exaggeration or it is close to reality? How do you handle that without having to spend 50+ hours adjusting your characters to be playable again after each patch?

I look forward to reading you,

1. Old D2 player here. Love the game but can't really go back to it anymore.(Still listen to the D1 & 2 soundtrack though)
Besides story I think PoE does nearly everything better then D2.
Better Itemization, character building etc.. Also way more content then D2.

2. Yup I think PoE is the best ARPG atm. But I can understand why some people don't like it if they are used to something more simple like Diablo 3.

3. I thought so, even back in 2013. Now the early game has gotten better.
But it also depend on how you play. If you for example just stick with heavy strike wihout support gems chances are its gonna feel kinda bad.

4. I have tried PvP but not a big fan of it. It has alot of end game content however. Lots of stuff to do.

Personally the greatest strength to PoEs longevity is that its so fun to reroll and try new characters.
Played about 2k hours on PoE so far.

5. Yeah think its a good time to start. If you just wanna build a character or copy a build is up to what you personally like.
If you make your own build, dont expect it to be great when your so new. Don't expect it to be viable for the super late game bosses like Shaper and Uber Elder.

6. The PVP is kinda like WoWs Arena but 1v1. I think... Don't really do PVP so cant answer.

7. When there is a new league PoE usually end up on top 8 or 9 of most played games on steam. At most around 90k people online at the same time.
However this doesn't show the none steam users. So PoE has no issues with player count. The amount of players usually dwindle 1 month into the league.
Which isnt strange since many people play it quite intense.

8. Overall I think the PoE community is quite friendly and very passionate about the game. Also seam to be less scammers then D2.

9.
No you dont need to worry that builds will be nerfed mid-league. Stuff like that happens when a new league or expansion starts. If for example the talent tree gets reworked you get a full respecc for your character.
I would say 9/10 nerfs have been justified.

Just a small comment about the community: there is like zero toxic/kiddy community. BUT there is , sadly , likely zero group play.
So everyone is playing on his own, on some maps 2 players are even slow you down.
I hope they will give us some bonuses in the future to lake coop gaming more rewarding.
I played D2 over 10 years and rolled hundreds of characters, over thousands of hours (both HC and SC). D2 to me is a game that will never be matched, period.

With that said POE is a very good game, but there are elements that I dislike.

I loved spears and crossbows in D2 but POE does not have those weapon types. I miss my Spearazons and Strafezons greatly. So far nothing in POE will satisfy this. For some reason enemies can use spears and crossbows but they are not available to the player to use.

The one-shot mechanic is very strong in this game, in d2 i could be one-shoted but it was when encountering a very specific eilite pack with specific mods, so I know what killed me. In POE i get one-shotted all the time and I have no idea what killed me.

10 acts are way too much, and the leagues here dont last long enough. So I play standard.

So I have some strong criticisms of the game for sure but I really do appreciate the depth this game has, and how the devs are constantly adding to the game. Give the game a chance and find out for your self, it took me two re-installs before i starting liking it, so it might take time.

There is almost no PvP on PoE.

--------------POE-----D2
Party Play:---5/10----9/10
Itemization:--9/10----8/10
Story:--------5/10---10/10
Build Variety-9/10----5/10
End Game------10/10---5/10
Play Time-----9/10----8/10

You build will not be nerfed in the middle of the league.
There is a gap between new league and old league. Adjustment are made in this gap.

Community is ok.
I dont know non-Steam users are counted but playerbase is more than D3 and D2.
Especially first 2 months of the league there will be more than sufficient players.

I started my PoE account to see if I really wanted to get back in the genre before buying D3.

I ended up staying here and spending twice the cost of the game on it.

Poe isn't perfect, but there are plenty of things done better in PoE than D2. The biggest thing you'll have to contend with is the learning curve. I started midway through abyss and have made progress since, and the last two big bosses I have left to conquer are Uber Atziri and Uber Elder.

Nostalgia for D2 got me to install PoE. The gameplay kept me here.
Yep, totally over league play.
all of you mentioning that d2 has a better story than poe
you ever read the dialogs? :D

also d2 is shit compared to poe in every aspect but that's just my opinion
( yes i played with d2 a lot and i loved it at the time )

A side note: Most people who cry foul on nerfs, are mostly people who benifitted greatly from builds/items that were beyond broken.
Maybe Diablo 2 experience will help you, but still you don't understand this game if you have never played it. You don't need to wait until 7 December, but might as well.

PoE has some juicy texts. It's true but story is not intense to attract new players.

Ask the poe community "Who exiled us?"
More than %50 will answer wrong or cant answer.

Story in PoE is good but you have to dig it to reach. This is not a newplayer friendly.

I think PoE's biggest weakness is this.
Not a new player friendly at all and also it's hard to learn and hard to master.
