Having overcapped resistances (at 109 after finishing the story mode) is a nice bonus but not mandatory.

Having 75 all elemental resistances is mandatory for endgame and it´s easier to acquire for new player.

The Elemental Weakness curse mods can appear on yellow (t6-10) and red maps (t11-16) and reduce resistances by 29% and 34% respectively.

By no means is overcapping them right away mandatory, and even then you can just avoid maps with these mods until you've managed your resistances.
