Hellgate: London is now on Steam

I’ve always wanted to play Hellgate. Read the books in my teens or twenties, whenever, and enjoyed them. Tried playing it two or three times, and what was in the game was just nothing like what was in my head from the books. If they gave it a remaster and console port, I’d probably give it another shot.

Spoiler
Not trying to plug my favorite game, but.. Doom really hit the mark where the old mmo missed. The books are fantasy ad absurdum, in much the same vein as WH40k novels. The environment is reduced to such extremes that it’d be difficult to imagine oneself there; therefore, everything is extreme. Quite epic, in a way so few games manage within their mechanical limitations.

Yeap, there was a definite mismatch between the look of the world and the story and characters.

Looking over Flagshipped and then images this one seems kinda apt...

Eh. I wasn’t referring to appearance, though now that I think about it issues with pacing were likely due to having a shitty pc. Can’t blame the game for that.

Okay, took a bit of work to get it going, but Lost London is *awesome*. The sheer scale of the areas adds a lot. The increased number of kills required makes it feel less 'go kill ten rats' MMO-ish. The increased monster density and aggression is perfect. And it combines the classes down so that Templar has both Blademaster and Guardian, Hunter has both Engineer and Marksman, and Cabalist has both Evoker and Summoner. It's a bit like Titan Quest with its two skill tree tabs. Bloody great stuff.

I'll never go back to vanilla HGL.

You, Sir, are a Prince among men.

Bookmarked.

People playing Hellgate again (whatever version it might be)... fuck yeah
GGG banning all political discussion shortly after getting acquired by China is a weird coincidence.

It's SO good, erd. The prince, however, is Seferoth, who apparently spent 4 years making this mod. I am but a squire.

Seferoth, huh?

Respect.

Thanks for the tips, too.

If there was a gaming genie and he gave me one wish I'd want a Hellgate 2 made by GGG.

(second would be a new Wave Race. Not by GGG.)

it's not as 'different' to the original as I'd feared. Definitely feels the same, although being able to combine two classes' skills is potentially broken -- Blademaster's sword attacks with Guardian's healing auras is wicked. But with the increased density and aggression, it doesn't seem like cheating at all. This is a VERY well balanced mod that basically makes Hellgate: London feel appropriately epic in scale.

I was going to ask for your 'professional' opinion on which version to start with as a newbie, but you seem to have it covered.

Lost London it is, then. Sounds delicious.

And just to be clear, I only need:

a) Hellgate: London v1.2
b) Lost London mod

...correct? No further mods / tweaking necessary?

Charan made me refund the HanbitSoft version and download the old game + mod. Bad influence!

Lost London V. Follow instructions. Mod if necessary. Got it.

Watched a couple of videos an I got a "Doom meets Diablo meets Deus Ex" feeling. Now there's a game that would be worth giving a shot for the novelty alone.
