Drain your mana with degen on your life (mom converts to mana damage) so distillate bonus is always up for some sweet max resist.

Don't go occultist unless you're prepared to invest in insane low life nonsense.

The best thing about starting chieftain is that you can just spec into jugg later when you're wealthier. Chieftain has that natural regen that's a huge advantage for mapping survivability early on, and the tree ultimately looks almost identical. So you only really need the regret orbs for speccing out of your ascendancy once you're geared & ready to play a jugg.
