They do great damage on their own so I don't think you'll have a problem making defensive choices with your gear and still fly through the game. Some small tips for leveling (currently at lvl 22):

"The great thing about this build is that your gear can be 100% defensive. There really isn't any offensive mod that will be beneficial early on that helps with offense. So make sure to use the Default Filter until you finish story mode as my filter is only for endgame. If you think more offense would be a better defense, feel free to use SRS or Skeletons until you're happy with your zombies. You could even attach Summon Phantasm on Kill to any of your minions too. (Because our zombie build doesn't need to worry about mana regen, I use skeletons instead of SRS until level 18 (when the rest of the minion supports unlock).
