Tencent has Invested in Grinding Gear Games

So @GGG what is the point? Why the sell of the Firm? Not enough money spent for future development, or does tencent offered too much money the 3 bosses can't resist as they are now millionares? ;)

It could be that they've decided that relying solely on the playerbase that throws a fit and threatens to quit the game forever over any half-major change isn't really that stable of a ground to stand on.

And when i say "half-major", i don't mean selling 80% of your company's shares, i mean stuff like removing instant leech from VP - the amount of people that threatened to end their support and quit the game was just barely lower than it is in this thread :D.

Now, that probably wasn't the actual reason they sold, but it's still a reasonable concern IMO :D.

Although to refer to current and future supporter packs as 'supporting' is probably a lie, and it is disingenuous to label them as such.

lol what are you talking about.

man people are doomsdaying so hard with this news its actually ridiculous.
yes you'd still be "supporting" GGG with your purchases, but lets be honest, it being labeled as "supporting" is more of a marketing thing because even though the money does "support" them, what you're doing as the consumer is purchasing MTX.
I don't know what to think I was happy supporting GGG did not see this merge at all. I do not think this is a good idea at all.
Don't want P2W - keep doing what you have been doing. The moment everyone stops supporting through the 'supporter packs', they'll have to start looking at the P2W aspect. As long as Tencent is happy with the income coming in, why mess with a good thing.

Flip side - damn near willing to bet a paycheck that no one in this thread has a clue what the contract stipulates and what clauses GGG put in. GGG didn't get the following they have due to being a bunch of morons.

Trust they are telling us the truth and if something goes sideways, jump then. All this negativity doesn't help GGG or the game itself. Chill out folks!

I wonder if Chris realizes how much of GGG's income was motivated by good will purchases from players. I just bought the $60 supporter pack over the weekend, definitely wouldn't have done that if I'd known about the buyout. People wanted to support them because they were an independent company making a quality product, and we wanted to see them succeed. I've given them ~300 dollars over the years, and I know a lot of people who've spent more. It isn't because we needed some shiny bauble for our account. It is because we wanted to see them succeed and continue making a game we loved.

With 80% of that going to Tencent, my motivation to spend money will strictly be "do I want a thing" and no longer "lets support this game I love." You can bet that I'll be a lot stingier with my money.

I'm going to keep playing the game, because in the short term it will still be the same game I know and love. In the long term, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Consider my enthusiasm dampened.

What I didn't see in the FAQ was why GGG needed the money. We might be a lot more sympathetic and understanding if we knew that GGG was hurting and needed outside money to keep operating, or to keep pushing out content at the pace we've come to expect, or whatever. Without any word on that, as far as we know, it is just Chris grabbing cash.

This.

I always buyed supporter packs because GGG was the first company actualy doing things right. Making a free to play game with an entirely fair pay model and without obeying to mainstream cash models, and just make the game they whant to play. Now there is a big chinese company, that will most likely slowly draining the hearth and soul of the game.

I not will buy any further supporter packs. #nocashforchina

So you sell to Tencent and then try to paint them as some good guys? They are a thiving moneygrubbing chinese company that made their starting funds by stealing ICQ and making a chinese copy, hiding behind chinese copy laws to avoid a lawsuit.

They are a horrible company that run social scores for the chinese government. They ran all their games into more P2W, bought out and put down dota forums and generally scumbagged a shitton.

Not to mention they are part owners of Acti/Blizzard crap and the same second a real D4 is in the works you will get slaughtered.

Well, make a deal with the devil and you will learn what happens, but at least you got your money.
I understand GGG might not be financially in good position but that Chinese corruption tho...can't trust them, they are worst than any imperialists in the past.
Tech guy
Its now over with poe. Sadly. I can understand chris and the owners of the company that its hard to give work to so many people and everyday collecting money for paying them. If you hire new people its hard to take the responsibilty for them. And its also your job. If the game makes a flop or like bestiary or talisman you make a big investment to create contend and then you have nothing staying in game thats really expensive.

BUT if a company buys another they will make money. And if the company will make money in china as people said then the agreement could be that they can do in china what they pay for but the company is a new zealand company. Now its not a new zealand company anymore. Its a chinese company (80 %) with the development team staying in new zealand. For now!

For the next 2 years i think there will be a big profit for ggg. But i think it will die at the end.
And unfortunataly ggg is NOT prepared for the end.

Perhaps that s the really reason why einhar cant stay in game.

I will wait how ggg will grow and then die in the mouth of a big chinese drake.

they are like atziry they hope to do the best for themselves and take the whole people who give them money as a big gift to the chinese god of money.

but how it ends with atziri we all know. Lets celebrate the last days ? month ? years ? of ggg.

But i dont pay chinese game developer so no money to ggg anymore. Sorry chris but you have sold the soul of ggg for a promise.

you know how the atztek people payed gold for the king. And what spain conquerors did with it?

I apologise, but I am not letting my money go to support a mega corp. A mega corp with a bad reputation mind you. PoE is one of the most expensive games around in terms of what you get for what you pay, but I didn't mind because I had the 'feel good' for supporting an indie dev. Kind of what you get when you pledge on kickstarter.
21/05/18 - The beginning of the end of PoE
When a company buys 80% shares of another company, they don't invest in it. They buy it !!! Plain and simple.
I am really disappointed by this? This may be the worst decision made by the company. We will probably remember this day in some time, when they will announce the disappearence of GGG,swallowed alive by the chinese investors wanting to 'step things up".

I feel like a little betrayed...I thought GGG was better than that, they would resist, they wanted to do quality over money, they would stay independent and rely on people.
This is a sad day.
