Loot Boxes

Or, as GGG calls them, Mystery Boxes. I don't like them. I think they're a cynical way to trick players into wasting money and therefore a cynical way to make a profit. I was always disappointed in GGG pushing them so hard. I ignore most whinging on the forums so I've never really read anything "scholarly" on the subject. I enjoyed reading this article though (it's short):

https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20180503/10075339771/gaming-industry-game-consumers-collision-course-over-loot-boxes.shtml

The gambling addiction concept is worrying. I don't know exactly how many mystery boxes I've personally purchased. I admit being obsessed with getting some new shiny that was only available via the MB's and spending probably a thousand points or more on boxes. And of course not getting what I want. But that isn't why I don't like them. I accept RNGoddammit and I've gotten lucky with MB's on occasion. But for someone who maybe can't afford buying a bunch of points it's a temptation to waste money on the MB's. I say it's a waste because the odds are so poor to get anything of real aesthetic value or use (edit: forgot to add, or a duplicate...). GGG's artificial valuation of the shinies is skewed so they make it sound like a good deal. Players fall for the gimmick and since GGG is never transparent about the odds (or have they been somewhere?) it's a true sucker's mini-game. I get "caveat emptor" and all that but I still think it's an almost dishonest mechanic. The odds are with the house yet it's not called gambling outright. Lame IMHO. For that reason I will NEVER purchase another Mystery Box. If we stop buying them they will have to give them up or make them more rewarding, right? ;)

Anyway, curious what others think of the article and practice in general, not necessarily just for POE.

P.S. I know there are other posts on this but the article put a bit of a broader spin on the topic for me.
POE Serenity Prayer: GGG, grant me the serenity to accept the RNG I cannot change,
the courage to challenge any unbalanced content, and the wisdom to avoid the forums.
Mad: "Oh, it's simple and if you insist... I just think you're a dick. That's all."

Oui.

So don't but them ? I never do. Everything in the mystery box is going to just go into the shop a few months down the road anyways. Wait for the right sale and you're getting it a lot cheaper than wasting money on mystery boxes.

No offense, but these things exist because people like you can't control your spending lol
There is zero trickery and zero dishonesty about mystery boxes. As Sarno already pointed out, GGG are perfectly transparent with the contents of the boxes and the specific odds of every item within. Every player has all the information they need to make a 100% rational decision about the purchase. If you are incapable of doing that, that is not GGG's fault in any way.

Heck GGG are more secretive about random monster drops than about lootboxes.

That is your decision, and it is a completely valid one. I have never purchased a box either. But it is not an excuse to slander GGG over it.

I think they're fun, I like getting something random, then trying it with my other mtx to see what looks cool.

1st of all mystery box=/=loot box because you don't get anything inside that relates to playing the game in any way. All you get is some mtx.
Big difference but the one you clearly don't get (or else you wouldn't say so in the opening line).

As mentioned before, all is transparent and the chances are known to the public. Also, if I'm not mistaken they made the box so every mtx that is inside is more expensive than the box itself.

May I ask if you consider Overwatch’s boxes to be loot boxes?

Blizzard apparently does: https://eu.shop.battle.net/en-gb/product/overwatch-loot-box

I can appreciate the distinction you are attempting to make between systems which are P2W and those which aren’t, but I’m not sure the naming dichotomy you refer to exists.

Well the "sin and innocence mystery box", is the proper name. These contain no loot, there is no way of winning loot from these boxes, they are not loot boxes, nothing in these intereacts in the game, other than in the mtx tab.

What do you call the boxes in Overwatch?
