Same base item but different /itemlevel

So today I noticed something that I have more questions about. 2 Items can look exactly the same but when you use the /itemlevel you get different numbers.

Example:
Unavailable
has an item level of 37
Unavailable
and has an item level of 43.

That is a big spread in numbers.

Does the Item level numbers affect the random chance of using orbs on an item? Like how many mods on the rare or how many tries for the max amount of sockets?

Is there any way to find the item level range outside of using /itemlevel in the game?

If the hidden item level number does affect the way crafting works on an item, is there a way to find this number from the chat channels or before I trade items?

Just a couple of questions (and maybe concerns) about having the same base item with a hidden ilvl number.

I love Path of Exile, keep up the great work!

Thank you
Legacy items are BS

Not exactly. But the item-level still has an effect on crafting:

(1) Have a look at the prefix and suffix mods available for rares and uniques. You'll notice that these mods require a certain item-lvl to be able to appear on an item.

For example:
A weapon only needs a minimum lvl of 11 to be able to get the 'serrated' mod (which increases the weapon's local physical damage by a random value between 50% to 69%).
But only a lvl 60 weapon is eligible to get the 'cruel' mod (which also increases its local physical damage, but the random value is much higher: 130% to 149%).
(^I hope these values are still upto date)

Modifiers
Modifiers are split up in to two main groups, prefixes and suffixes. A magic item can have only one prefix and one suffix, never two prefixes or two suffixes.
Rare items can have up to six modifiers, it is unknown if there is a limit on how many of these can be prefixes/suffixes.
A randomly generated rare item (from a drop or Orb of Alchemy) receives between four and six modifiers randomly, with the following odds:
1/12 chance of 6 mods
4/12 chance of 5 mods
7/12 chance of 4 mods

All modifiers have a level associated with them, and will only appear on items whos item level is greater than or equal to the modifier's level.

(2) The item-level also affects the number of sockets that can appear on the respective item. That's why one doesn't find any equip with more than two sockets at very low lvls.

So if you're 'fishing' for valuable mods via crafting, you'd want to make sure it has the right item-lvl.

That is unbeknownst to me! /itemlvl is the only command I know of, regarding checking the item-lvl (besides 'educated guesses' by looking at the mods' values).

An item's Item Level will always be equal or greater than the minimum level of the (white version) item.

So if you seen those boots for trade, you would know that they are at *least* Item Level 33.

Additionally, you can just ask.
For the most part, most 5 and 6 socket items (what most people would be concerned about item level on) will be either item level 50/51, 54/55, 55/56, or 60/61. This is due to the locations (zones) that are most farmed in Merciless difficulty (Ledge, Felshrine, Dread Thicket, and Chaos).

Guy: I guess there are people that NEED quests for direction.
Guy2: I always wonder how those people get through life.
GuyMontag: They get married. Wives are like quest-givers.
