The drop rate dilemma

So,

there is one thing that just kills it for me, every time I play.

Quite often on a new hero, I find my first exalt round about Act 4. Often, after multiple chaos. At the same time, I play this game for over two years now and have not found a single six link, nor was I able to craft one, with round about thousand orbs of investments.

In the current league, I had to retire my necromancer, as I was unable to find a zombie mace, a Baron or even a working five link with decent stats. Red map drops were rare as well, pretty much non existent, a beachhead map - not once! and who has fun running shore all the time, due the pitiful drop rates?

The game just doesn´t let you progress, if you don´t trade.

Now at the Turmoil race, a similar situation. I find an exalt at Act 3, but at Act 5 I am not offered a single useful threshold gem... I was offered a zombie gem, heck I am an archer... I was offered melee games, again I am an archer...

Are you kidding me, you consistantly get an exalt by act 3-4 ?
Dude you have horseshoes or something. I didnt find my first exalt in turmoil until lvl 82.
I didnt find an exalt in harbinger until 87.

buy a corrupted 6link for 100 chaos or so with the colors you need. or save up for a 6L to color yourself.

If you think you need a 6l to do end game you can go right ahead and quit the game for all I care. This isn't the first time I have said this: YOU DO NOT NEED A 6L, hell you can get to at least early red maps on a 4l.

Depends on the build.

However, the 6th link gives way too much power. The "more" multipliers on support gems have become inflationary, and most of them are pure dumb. Add an intrinsic "20% less damage" to all support gems on top of whatever they do at the moment, and the game (and the need for a 6th link) would be in a much better state.

Of course there are better ways than just adding a flat 20% less to all support gems, i.e. rebalance them, but yeah.

It gives a big boost in power yes, is it still a necessity, absolutely not though, which was more my point. I have like... 3? builds that are utilizing 6ls and they are all in standard and barely see any play anymore. Pretty much every league I have ended using a 5l in any 6s items, and I could have felt no real difference if using a 5l instead of a 6l when I did in fact have one for that build. In the long run, that extra spot is a big difference. But for a more casual player just looking to farm the higher maps consistently for a few hours a day or something, no reason to bother if trade is out of the option if SSF or whatever self restrictions.

Well, don't forget: one of the ways to deal with harder content is to over-power your character relative to it, which means you don't have to deal with mechanics nearly so much. If you can burn shaper in 2 seconds, you don't really have to deal with much compared to someone who takes 2 minutes, etc.

So for some people that sixth link absolutely will be "necessary" for higher tier content, in the sense that without it they cannot complete that challenge level. It is definitely easy to mistake this for "nobody can complete...", since there honestly isn't much in terms of build guides that don't aim for 6L + some serious unique synergies.

I mean, count how many "facetank shaper" vs "this'll do, but you need to play real good" guides there are... can't blame someone for getting the idea that without being able to facetank it, shaper is impossible.
I swear man... if GGG ever considered making the SSF option non-transferrable and buffing the rates there to compensate... I would never play any other version of the game.

Drop a little more than current poe... but way less (80%ish less) than diablo 3... make it non transferrable to standard or any league... and BOOM: Life long customers.

You know you can just flat pay 1,500 orbs of fusing to get a six-link item, and six sockets for 350 jewlers orbs, right?

Didn't know that.

*checks*

No, I can't. I don't have 1500 Fusings. Not enough time yet in the league to farm 1500 fusings. Maybe in another month or two. Oh, wait.

You won't find 1500 fusings, but you can get enough Jeweller orbs that you trade for fusings at a vendor. Also doing the 2 master's missions that give you fusings and jewellers orbs help a lot as well.

There is also pretty good chances of getting (corrupted) 6-links from Uber Lab if you have a build that can do full key runs.
The plan is simple: win! If you do not win, you did not follow the plan

FWIW, in low level maps (T1 - T5) over the last 90 minutes I got around 50 - 80 fusings worth of jewelry orbs from the six-socket-item vendor recipe. (I didn't keep exact track.) This is with approximately zero IIQ from anything, including no bisco's collar, on my character. higher map levels and more IIQ will improve the return here.
