Desecrate... ?

Today's patch was supposed to allow desecrate to spawn the same mob type as was being used as spectre...

Just entered a map and spent 10 minutes desecrating - the one spectre I lost (on purpose) never spawned.

Working as intended?
Patch Notes 3.15:
Fixed a bug where players believed the game was playable. This has been corrected and made retroactive.
Patch Notes 3.19:
Fixed a bug where players adapted to 3.15. This bug cannot be corrected, so we have implemented a 90% reduction in item access as a punishment.

Do you need to lose the spectre in the zone? Or do you need to have at least one live one for the trick to work?
The dev manifesto stated that Desecrate pulls from enemies in the zone, plus any Spectres that have existed in the zone. It should work if you have had one Spectre and it died.

I tested this, and I can say that in my experience the patch did nothing.

Picking up a 'kiln mother' (molten orb caster) I took it to a map and let it die... I had 3 flame sentinels remaining.

Desecrate for 10 minutes, no kiln mother corpse

I then let one of my flame sentinels die.

Repeated the desecrate for another 10 minutes. No kiln mother, no flame sentinel.

Desecrate is still useless for maintaining spectres.

That's not because the patch didn't work, that's because "Kiln Mother"s fundamentally cannot be desecrated.

Could just be RNG (aside from what Mark is saying). Sometimes you can spam it for a few mins and never see the corpse you're after.

Desecrate works great IMO. I opened a map with the lunaris mod, nabbed some Frost Sentinals and could spawn their corpses with desecrate in every one of the 15 or so maps I ran afterwords without the lunaris mod.

Just a lowly standard player. May RNGesus be with you.

If it leaves a corpse and can be raised, why can it not be desecrated? And surely that should be changed, since it's hidden information players have no way of figuring out outside of extensive testing.

Because they fundamentally cannot be desecrated. This isn't turned off for balance or to restrict options, but because certain monsters, mostly those with on-death effects, cannot be spawned by dead for mechanical reasons, the most extreme cases being those which would kill the player, or grant them free experience (both of which briefly happened when that setting wasn't being respected).
