they said it YEARS ago though, that there would only be 1 "difficulty",
that normal, cruel, merciless would be replaced by the fact they were going to have 10 acts,
we were told that during like closed beta

me and a buddy would play this game and fantasize about the 10 acts, and not having to run through 3 difficulties... for hoours wed come up with ideas and stuff,
and that was before 1.0

But in 3.0, doubtful. GGG once again goes ham mode just like in act 4 adding the all star team (Malachai, Daresso, Kaom, Shav, Maligaro, Deodre, and Voll) in one act. Now we get 6 acts, but of course merciless will be removed. If GGG did not add 6 acts in 3.0, would you have expected merciless to be removed this soon?

sure, but its not a new mechanic, and its not "wacky"
and it really doesnt address a problem that "many ARPGs have" comparable to gold or potions

i mean like

Crystalis for NES, has gold and potion analogue, and thats kinda lame, it DOESNT have repeating acts
Secret of Mana for SNES , has gold and potion analogue, thats kinda lame, it DOESNT have repeating acts

but i mean sure, those are old games,

Diablo has gold,potions, repeating acts
Titan Quest has gold, potions, repeating acts

... i dont know of many more well known ARPGs .. lol

anyways, removing repeating acts is just sooo obvious, any dude and his grandma and dog knows thats a problem with an ARPG ... and easily fixed..

but i mean sure, gold and potions takes some ingenuitous conceptual effort to think a way around... id expect the thing Chris Wilson mentioned would be in that ballpark.. i mean he said it was..

but whatever, give away the mirror... im just hoping theres more to 3.0 that is really cool, and not just the lame removing repeating acts .. cause we were told that years ago..

The mechanic Chris may have been referring to may not have been announced yet. I wouldn't even call 10 acts a "mechanic"

I'd hold off on awarding any prizes until we learn more.

Not just Diablo and TQ, but also Grim Dawn, Torchlight 2, Dark Souls, Sacred 2, and Borderlands had repeating acts.

Edit: Actually the "mechanic" happens to be related to the difficulty modes, Chris said it in reddit. Though, he is good at red herring.

Nah, seems like another type of ascendancy-like passive. Much more limited though.

I would say Ascendancy is a mechanic though, and the reduction of difficulties not so much. Unless you're talking about the mechanics of a portal that you go through that changes the world you've come to know, kinda like Cataclysm was for WoW

It is one of the major points in how GGG decided to make "6 more acts" hence removing cruel and merciless to solve the difficulty mode problem that most ARPG are still copy pasting. Act 5 is the actual new area, but act 6-10 are the same areas of act 1-5, but with many changes to the environments, lores, mobs, routes, and even quests. Feels more of an actual sequel. This is probably the tip of the iceberg.

Preliminary result: I did go through all the pages in the thread to see who came closest. Dark_Chicken was the first to suggest that all difficulties would be removed: "Remove difficulties, having only to do the entire story once and zone level scaling.". I have not managed to find a post that got closer to what was actually announced (specifically adding a lot of new acts). Just in case that I overlooked something I will wait for another 24 hours before handing over the mirror. Please post in this thread if you feel that I overlooked something.

which is technically what they did, they reused all the tilesets and changed the quests from normal. They only don't call it merciless anymore. This is what I had in mind with my post, but I understand if it was not specific enough for you or if someone else wrote it before me.

Anyway, I am really glad they are doing this. I would be more glad if they had included story variations like I also wrote, but this is probably way too much work.

The two difficulties will be divided by a Cataclysm event caused by the Beast. This was Malachai's goal so that he could reshape the world and destroy his enemies. Chris did mention how successful pallet swaps have worked for the experience of diversity in map areas. I think the two difficulties will be affected by some amount of pallet swaps and other balance, visual, and story changes to create a more seamless experience.

Also, because of the need to ease the new player experience there may be some tutorial content added before Twilight Strand.

Faendris, what do you think of my post?

Two difficulties divided by Cataclysm (Cataclysm used because ggg has that word in the lore) event caused by the Beast.
