What skills can you use when you're out of mana?
It's been a while since I've had a chance to play the game, is there anyone who knows if there are skills that don't require mana to use?
Thanks in advance. Happy Days Abound. Last edited by Silver#3607 on Feb 6, 2012, 3:29:07 AM

Still?
I realize a game is all about restrictions and rules, but generally using abilities is pretty damn fun compared to the default attack alone. Thanks for the reply though. Happy Days Abound.

actually some lesser, not so power full but still very useful skills that do not require mana would be and interesting addition

Personally I wish designers would be more open to new trends and ideas in game design. No design is perfect but there's always something cool to be found.
Skills = cool. I guess the biggest issue is that people like to take these examples to the extreme - if I can use a skill for free then why not use every skill for free? The why not should be self evident but it isn't. A designer creates restrictions that the player must live by. Every skill could be free to use but they aren't because that would get boring. Players need restrictions. But I beleive that some game designs are too restrictive and that also creates a very boring game. So ultimately there needs to be a balance put in place by the designers of the game. Why can't there be some skills that a player can use when they're out of mana? Is it litterally impossible to imagine? I don't beleive it is, there's this idea that a game must live up to its roots even if those roots aren't very great or fun at times. In diablo 2 by max level mana didn't matter with the right gear, and in this game your stuck with limited mana and skills that can only be used when you have mana. I personally don't enjoy the combat when I can only use my default attack. I do however think it would be cool if I had a back up skill for when I ran out of mana - something better than my default attack but not as good as a typical mana based skill. That's what I think. Yes, players need restrictions...
but - if you have (one) spell with no mana cost (or, which is still castable with empty manabulb, what leads into nearly the same fact), you will be forced into using this skill prefered against others. More problems came from the fact, that you would be able to link this skill to supports, leading into a strong skill - without cost. The " forced restriction" to use mostly/only this skill is not the way I want it - and as it seems thats also true for the devs. On the other hand, I see it like this: there's no complain about the need of dexterity to improve the hitchance, no complain about strength to wear heavy armour - so why complain about needing a kind of ressource (here: called mana for all chars instead of parting into several different names) to use magical attacks? The only thing, I tend to think about (in this matter) is the scaling of the cost values with some support skills - may be too high for non-int addicted chars? invited by timer @ 10.12.2011

Non-mana based skills could be blocked from being altered by support skills. Or they could simply be made weaker when using them on non-mana skills.
Anyways, the main point is that to me the default attack is boring and a skill would simply be more fun to use. Even if it's not as strong as a mana-based attack. Happy Days Abound. Last edited by Silver#3607 on Feb 6, 2012, 7:45:41 AM

I understand the way you think, and I partially agree. But there stays a problem: if the "backup" skill is too weak, its useless; if its (too) strong, then the mana-consuming skills become more or less obsolete...
Maybe its possible to define (and implement - dont have an idea about the needed effort) some sets of 'default' skill attacks for spells, compared to the melee and ranged default attack, to what your attacks fall back when aout of mana. And I have also no basically idea, how such a fire/cold/lightning skill could show, beside that it dont have an AOE component (also similar to melee/ranged) invited by timer @ 10.12.2011

You can use the Portal skill for no mana.

Just get blood magic if mana is such a problem....
