How Long Did it Take to Understand This Game?

over 4 years and counting

I'm not good with reading and theory, so I have to swap eq, gems, burn regrets till all works. Why it works, why it didn't work, I have no idae tho. I'm not really good with trading either, so that "gear swapping" is pretty funny sight sometimes. So you see, even bit dense and lazy guys may have fun here :)
Burn all the orbs!
Took me forever, I still probably don't get it all but it seems these days I can at least make it past cruel on my own before I have to switch things up. Once I learned I can't have it all and need to focus on a few skills then my play time has become a lot more efficient and successful

What long times players often forget, is that this game was WAY more easy to learn back in the days. We all had the basic understandings of the game, when the following addition came along:

- Corrupted areas
- Map Device (non-map) areas like Atziri and The Pale Court
- Lootboxes
- Masters
- Essences
- Bigger Passive Tree
- Ascendancy classes
- The Lab
- Enchantments
- Vaal implicit mods (and how it can affect gear)
- Jewels

And I could go on. Long time players learned all those things when they already had a good, basic understanding of the game, which makes learning new things pretty easy.

New players have to learn all this from the get-go. And it IS a clusterfuck of information thrown in your face. It is not comparable with learning the game 3-4 years ago. At all. And I think that a lot of long time players forget this... Or just doesn't realize it.

This.
That said, imo you need a few days to get the basics ( if this is your first ARPG, weeks), a league to have a better understanding of all the game content and all possibile interactions, a lifetime to master ;-)

I am not a smart man...but i know what love is.

Been playing forever and still know jack shit. Just once I would love to be able to answer a question in guild chat lol.
Took me roughly four months to get all of the basics down.

Then another year of making wonky mechanical builds to test fringe cases of mechanical behavior and interactions.

Though this was four years ago, so i reckon it would take longer nowadays to start from nothing.

I considered a failed build a win early on, since it granted me insight in the "why" it failed.

Arguably you where required to keep on learning in the past though, since they changed stuff up like the passive tree and base-line life value's etc as well as tuning monster damage.(which impacts base-line defenses and ehp requirements)
I feel that's no longer the case now, might change with the release of 3.0 though if they change fundamentals again.

It takes people way longer than they think it takes them to actually understand the game

Indeed and even when you think you have learned most of whats going on in this game you find that's isnt always the case. Took me a few months to really learn how things work but from there after a few years playing i STILL learn new things all the time. Thats what make this game great.

Playing in a guild with people who all have played the game for quite some time is very helpful. Or at least it was for me. Learning from the exps and trial and error of others is great way to learn a lot in a short amount of time. The rest just takes trial and error of your own. Streamers are another good place to pickup information about the game not only from the streamer themselves but the people in their chats as well.
There is a fine line between Consideration and Hesitation.
The former is Wisdom, the latter is Fear.

Learning how to play the game was fairly simple. Learning how GGG expects it to be played took a really long time, and learning how to play in spite of that, even longer. I'm at like 800 hours or so now. Piddly time compared to some.

All the side stuff doesn't take long to learn if you're current with the game as each new one drops. Coming in fresh, there is a lot of side content to get introduced to and work your way in to.
