what keeps you motivated Farming Maps over and over?

It's easy indeed, I simply don't run the lab. I level to sixty-something, do normal, cruel and merciless in one go like pulling a tooth and that's it. For this league I haven't set my foot in a uber trial and I get this warm glow every time I skip one.

Gag :D

Oh yes, the uber lab and trials have been nothing but pure joy for me this league.
You have to be realistic about these things.

Cheers Bars, having a laugh.

Sorry you feel that way though, but take comfort in providing me some laughter with your passive aggressive yet ever so subtle anti-lab clues.

No worries mate, it's just pixels :P Although 'subtle' isn't the first word I'd use to describe my anti-lab forum build :)

The Atlas has helped quite a lot, as well as the general map upgrades. I think in any game, having goals helps with motivation. I've not played many MMOs, but it's easy to get addicted to the "daily quests" even if the benefits are minimal.

This is the first league I've joined since I started playing and it was nice to have a fresh start. I don't have the time or patience to run a league every time, but with the introduction of the atlas and the crafting element of essences, it seemed like a good one to start with.

But back to the Atlas itself, getting the progression on that is fun to check off the boxes as you complete them. With fewer annoying maps to play, I feel like my mapping time is better utilized. Once I clear the map requirement, I can tier up the complicated, high-dead-end-area maps and play the better streamlined ones.

The mileage varies of course, but as long as the map pool keeps up, it's good to continue attempting the harder and harder maps to test your characters skills.

I don't have tons of time to play, so between mapping, boss runs (Atziri, Labs, maybe Shaper at some point), master dailies, and trading, I have enough to keep my attention for the evening.

It bores me too. About the time you hit the lake in Merciless, or do a few maps, or hit lvl 80 or so it gets so boring. The skill points are my drug and they come way too slow after about lvl 80.

I also have CRD(Chronic Restarter's Disorder). I beat myself up a lot about it. Every league I vow to not make so many characters. This league I said only two characters! now I have about 7. Ripped one about lvl 83 to uber Izaro, Ripped one at lvl 62 in the mines, trying a build that should only be played in Standard... 4 are map-ready, and a couple are new. I hit lvl 87 on my main last night. Only the second time I hit lvl 87, and that's the highest level I ever had and I have been playing since one month before open beta - 4000+ Steam hours...

I decided (as others have said) it's a game, and you're supposed to be having fun. Making lots of different characters and trying out all of these things is what I enjoy, so that's what I (will) do.

It took about 4 hours to go from lvl 86 to lvl 87 last night while mapping with a friend; I could get a new character to Cruel in that time. That's around 48 more skill points of Pavlovian pleasure. :)

I agree, and while the end-game many of the characters will fizzle out, the skills, items, supports, and interactions between them all, there are so many different build possibilities. It's great to come up with something on your own and put it through the leveling test to see how it plays.

Once I get a character in the upper-80s/lower-90s, with as good of gear that I'll be able to afford, the motivation drops a lot. I have that issue with motivation in most games. The journey to make your character as powerful as possible is so much fun, then once you reach your theoretical maximum, then what do you do?

On the other hand...

I'm actually the opposite. I like playing one character for the sole purpose of spoiling it as much as I can. I want to relevel gems so I can get optimal corrupts when they hit 20/20. I want to save so I can get the best obtainable upgrades for my price range. I want to have currency to fall back on instead of rolling another alt.

I tend to end up doing this as well. While I may make a series of alts to play around with, I always find myself enjoying one character a lot more and focus heavily on them. While alts are fun, and you can make almost ANY build mapping viable, it's nice to have a heavy-hitter in the arsenal to tackle any of the really difficult content.
"what keeps you motivated Farming Maps over and over?"

I don't, usually. I play a character build through some maps to see how far it can go and then I stop when it's not fun anymore. Then I take a break to level a new character playing a different build.

New leagues and new expansions motivate me to play, and sometimes if I like my build I'll do more mapping. I was pretty excited about exploring the new map types, layouts, and bosses in Atlas.

Recently I've been running all the Grotto maps I have saved up, trying to find the cards for The Taming. I'm not sure those even drop there anymore, but I cackle maniacally whenever I stand in the boss's purple chaos firestorm as CI. mwahahahaha.

I'll do maps for days on end and then move on to other characters as the mood strikes me.

I've been running maps with the perandus map-mod and it makes it slightly more exciting knowing Cadiro might be there giving you neat deals, or the possibility for a Varunastra drop.
I'm also only at tier 9 maps so far so I have plenty to explore.
