Working as intended? Or a bug?

Hello, I was wondering if there's a technical reason why using the combination of Eye of Innocence and The Rat Cage doesn't proc Vaal Molten Shell when you ignite. The wording suggests that it would, considering VMS procs whenever it prevents physical damage and The Rat Cage converts fire damage you take to physical. Thank you for the help.

My guess is that the damage from Eye of Innocence is just damage taken and is not considered to be a "hit." [Nope - I guessed wrong.] Vaal Molten Shell procs on physical damage from a hit. (You also need to mitigate some amount of the physical damage to proc it.)

If you receive a hit of fire damage from an enemy, presumably the Rat Cage would convert a portion of this to physical damage and trigger Vaal Molten Shell since this would be damage from an actual hit.

Edit: I am going from the wording on the VMS gem, which says "any physical damage from a hit," whereas the patch notes simply state "any physical damage" and don't clarify that the hit requirement remains.


Edit2: As often happens when guessing, I appear to have been incorrect about this. Secondary damage taken from a unique in this way does appear to be considered a hit. See below.

That would make sense, but it works with Heartbound Loop. That and Eye of Innocence have similar wording in that you take damage. The difference is the type of damage, which leaves me to believe that it doesn't work correctly with The Rat Cage.
That is interesting that it works for Heartbound Loop, but not for Eye of Innocence with the Rat Cage.

Yes.

If so, where exactly (aside from the fact that the reflected damage can be blocked/dodged etc..)?

The primary difference is that the reflected damage is reflected damage, which carries a whole bunch of rules baggage. Reflected damage cannot trigger on-hit effects, for example. The other two are just hits of regular secondary damage you deal to yourself. They are more different than they are similar.

Does damage taken from Heartbound Loop count as 'your hits'?

I would need to know in what context to answer this conclusively, but probably yes.



ii) According to the Wiki (admittedly not infallible), of the four main types of damage in POE, only damage over time is not considered to be a hit. Attack, spell, and secondary damage are all considered to be hits.

Hey guys, there were two problems with the Rat Cage. Today, we put out a fix for one of the problems (X% of Fire Damage taken as Physical Damage). There is still an issue with having Vaal Molten Shell proc off of converted damage (in this case, Fire --> Physical).

We will have a fix out for this as soon as we can. Sorry for any confusion caused by the patch note. I can see how that would lead people to believe this interaction would be working now :(

Any ETA on that fix hartlin? im not expecting a "oh yeah its out next tuesday" but more a "yeah we have a few leads on what it might be, couple patches from now maybe" kind of answer would be great.
