Lightning Spec - Is it wroth it?

Why everyone here is forgetting about the Str gem: lightning strike?

You know one aspect of the game is your not bound to way to go..
Try lightning strike witch, Dagger lightning strike/whirling blades, multiple projectiles, piercing, Attk speed/ light dmg/ elemental dmg

we're talking about int gems not str gems, cause a witch shouldn't have to go to the lightning tree then str to become as useful as a frost mage
honestly a fire mage only has 1 skill, firestorm.

stacked with an ignite and fear gem and throwing up frost walls (which block projectiles, but not firestorm) is decent, though you need to take mana regen or leech items or whatnot to keep it going.

ice spear is kinda bleh, and the novas don't work at high level, unless you really like bosses one hitting you.

for damage i honestly think sparks wins, if you make it pierce and multi, and take the crit stuff, which shocks enemies (makes them take more damage). The problem is to reliably hit guys you need to get closer to them and if you wall, you can't shoot past it...

There are various "convert X damage to Y type", and many more melee skills for Templars. Plus traps may benefit from skills. But for now, Frost has almost twice the amount of skills as the other elements. The skills compliment each other well and form a complete set, which make Frost very attractive.

Personally, I'd like to see the following. Fire could use a quick-casting AoE nova-style spell with high Burning chance and some form of crowd control. Lightning should have the weird damage spread on Shock Nova removed and get a single-target lightning or chain lightning spell.


Every game with lightning magic needs a chain spell.
but are you playing on hardcore mode?
How about simple lightning spell with chance to pierce? I mean "lightning from diablo 2". Plus, additionally support gem "chain damage", which can work like that: hit first target with 80% dmg, next with 50% and last with 20%. Introdusing such support will add some different builds alternative to multiple targets support gem.

As for the fire some skill like fire snap(with increased chance to burn) would be welcome. Fire Traps are good but they work a little different.
i did the same thing as the op as soon as i got into beta. created a witch and started buffing lightning as much as i could. reasoning? because no matter what game i play, chain lightning is almost always my favorite, whether or not its really all that powerful in that game. i'm kinda amazed to see it not already in here... isn't that kinda a staple? if not a bunch of different new spells, at least a chain lightning (not meandering ball) type spell!
