Blade vortex life/mana leech not working

Hi,
I'm new to the game.
My char is a shadow, using blade vortex as my main skill.
For some reason using blade vortex does not seem to leech any mana / life, although I invested points in passives like essence sap and life leech.

I doubt it's a bug and the description says it does physical damage so it left me confused as to why it's not working.

Thanks in advance.

It is a 'spell', not an 'attack'. Those nodes say they only work with 'attacks'.
Face it, all of your suggestions are worse than this idea:

Blade Vortex is a spell, spells cannot benefit from "Life gain on Hit/Mana Gain on Hit" because in order to "hit" something you have to attack it. Spells arent attacks soo they dont technically "hit". Its one of POEs weird wording things.

Youll notice that on hit is usually followed by "attack", the one case this isnt how it functions is with Cybils Paw because it has a modifier to it that gives life gained on hit with spells.

Harvest sucks! But look at my decked out gear two weeks in!

Labyrinth salt farm miner.

"But my build diversity" , "Game is too hard!" - Meta drone playing the same 1-3 builds for years.

No offense, but this is completely wrong. Spells hit (and count as hitting for all purposes). Only damage over time does not hit. It's just that almost all sources of life/mana gain on hit specify that it has to be an attack.

Thanks for the info guys.
The best way to leech life with blade vortex would be using either the respective leech gems or blasphemy+warlord's mark.
I make dumb builds, therefore I am.

Spells do hit just as much as attacks, just as Viperesque says. LGoH is the exception since it specifically says it only works for attacks. CoH works just fine with spells though.

Not even an exception, really:

Why does Melee Damage on Full Life not actually scale "melee" damage. It currently only scales Melee "physical" damage. Shouldn't the support be renamed Melee "Physical" Damage on Full Life? Alternatively make it scale all melee damage on full life. It would be really fun and cool to do melee elemental CI attackers.

Support names are indicative in general of what they do. They are explicitly not supposed to be full descriptions of exactly how they work. That's what the stat descriptions on the support are for.

Essentially, if gem names were accurate rather than vague descriptors, then the gems should be named:

Melee Physical Damage on Full Life Support

Life Gain on Attack Hit

-but according to Mark, that's not how it's supposed to work, and you're supposed to look at "the stat descriptions on the support:"

When you mouseover, you clearly read "... Hit by Supported Attack." Spells are never Attacks, and there isn't even any conversion to allow Spells to benefit from Attack bonuses yet.

The rules are working exactly as written and are internally consistent as per this game's Usage of Capitalized Word Definitions.

So what about this item?

You just have to guess with that one, or try it out, or ask people who already know.
There's no way to find out just by reading the mod on the weapon.

Aye, I have a vague memory of testing that, and it was Attacks only. I believe the reasoning is:

Mods on items are local if they can be local, i.e. they modify some stat that already exists on a white version of an item. The ability to Hit is apparently a built in property of Weapons, because mods like Causes Bleeding on Hit are also local. Thus, any life gain on hit that doesn't specify Attack or Spell on a weapon will be Attack (with that Weapon) only.

There is like a 7% chance that I completely misremembered my test results, so if you want to be 100% certain, test it yourself (probably easiest way would be having Orbs of Regret ready and use Vaal Pact to measure Life levels precisely)
