randomly dropping pets?

Hey fellas,
Did some looking around and couldn't find any info exactly spelling it out, so I figured I'd make a thread. are pets something that have chances of dropping, or are they purely microtransaction purchases? I know what the wiki says, but I've already had a buddy magically have a pet appear (he has no idea how it got there) and now I'm staring at an acidic scorpion on the ground in the Belly of the Beast. Rogue Exiles have pets with them, and when you kill the exile, the pet will hang around. It isn't something that you can pick up however.

The reward for reaching 36 challenges in Prophecy is Navali's monkey pet. So that's a free one. The "mysterious frog" is free, too, but you have to personally meet a dev for a code :-D (also, not sure if that's still done but I sure hope so).
