I was considering speccing my summoner into this as well, sort of struggling between the choice of Life+eldritch battery so i can run Auras, or CI+ES.

EB seems like the better option, though not having to worry about chaos resist is a major perk.

I honestly don't find EB that useful where it's at on the passive tree if you're playing a witch. Witch has access to some of the best +% mana and +% mana regen in the game and playing a summoner, your mana usage - while high in short bursts, shouldn't be too hard to sustain at higher levels when your zombies/spectres literally never die because their HP is 10-14k a pop.

An interesting mechanic to make energy shield more attractive is for monsters to not be able to hit through it. Meaning that if you have 100 energy shield and a monster hits you for 200, it takes away your energy shield but not any Hp. Essentially stops you from ever being one shot. Not sure if this would kill EB builds but it's a thought.
i run a straight es build and CI with GR,both in my opinion are still very good even after the CI nerf. However it takes more points to get the ES to where it was in CB, but the nodes to do so are right on the way to CI also. Do that with the ES shield regen delay nodes and its pretty awesome. I pop a granite when things get a little hairy but overall its not too bad. I probably wouldn't be using an ES/CI build in hardcore though, as it seems by the time the whole build comes together and you gear is proper it may be a little late game. I know i wouldnt have survived but my skills arent as good as others who play either.

This is called CI.
Energy Shield is fine...

Pretty much ALL endgame players, except a few very specific builds, completely avoid consistent damage (kiting).
Which means all that matters is that when you do get caught, you have enough health or ES to absorb the blows while you are escaping. Energy shield actually does this quite well, because it regens so quickly once you start kiting again.

Most players either go:
-Pure ES/immune. Same as health, but you can get more ES than health
-Pure health/Eldrich Battery. Aura stacking is the reason, probably the best option right now.
-Health/ES mix. Strong against everything except Chaos damage, but usually enough health to plan for that.

As for the whole "I could be getting armor" arguement. Armor is worthless against the mobs you are stacking health or energy shield against in the first place.

Reading comprehension isn't your strong point, right?

Ah, I misread the post. At any rate, that'd be a rather silly idea as then you could just have shit for ES and health.

This would be imba when coupled with Zealot's Oath.
The main problem with energy shield is that it is way too gear dependent at the moment. You need great ES gear too survive while every hp build can do just fine without HP on every item wich is much more easy to get.

The problem before the nerf was that you could get huge EHP from CI without investing much passive points, but they did not buff the passive nodes enough to counter the CI nerf. So now you are even much weaker with way more passive points invested into defensive nodes.

Also the increase in enemies that can puncture you was also a huge nerf !
Depending on the monters the puncture one is paired with it is often a oneshot against a energy build regardless of the amount of shield since you miss the instant regen flasks and gain much less benefit from granite+armor % flasks. Often the only thing a punctured CI build can do is try to TP out asap, wich is just stupid for maps.
