So, what's the deal with exalted orbs or does the POE economy just not make sense?
Please note:
This isn't about Perandus or Cadiro or public stash tabs, whether the economy is "good" or "bad", is sustainable or unsustainable, too static or too volatile or etc, etc. It's about things fluctuating around the exalted orb and it seems arbitrary and bizarre. The best real life analogy I can think of is how different economies are tied to the value of the prominent and dominant currencies (US$, euro, yen, etc) but that seems like a stretch. What I see is more the equivalent of somebody saying, "Man, this inflation is out of control, I used to be able to exchange 4 US quarters for 1 US dollar but now I need 7!" And I'm like, uh, that's not how inflation works. A loaf of bread might cost 1000 dollars in the future but those 4 quarters will remain static. I get how the master crafting can and did change the value of the currencies unto themselves and subsequently to each other, but that should result in sharp dips and spikes in the ratios and then settle to new but largely static ratios, not a steady increase of the ratio of all orbs to the exalted orb. In line with that I also get how the orbs double as goods and services AND as currency themselves so a real life equivalent doesn't exactly exist (you can't use your 1 US dollar to either buy a candy bar or magically consume it to add a millimetre to your height... the closest thing might be cryptocurrencies doubling as commodities and currency but that's a wild tangent) but I'm suspecting this whole exalted orb business is just a self-perpetuating accident. So what am I missing? I know TV's The Big Bang Theory didn't lie to me and their are smart cookies that also play video games. "Dude he fucking said hotdog racist. What the fuck did I just read.
So basically your entire post focused around this point: Exalted Orb prices are still rising. Why didn't you just type that? And it's always like that. Exalts' price keeps rising until around 80-85 chaos orbs, and then proceed to decrease in value a bit until it's closer to 55-60 chaos at the end. |

Due to the high amount of different currencies AND the fact that they also all perform a specific function AND the fact that "loot" in this game is completely RnG...
The prices will ALWAYS fluctuate. It's what makes this economy so interesting. Perandus - EVERYTHING is dirt cheap and fluctuates quite a bit. Past Leagues/Future Leagues - Everything will kind of level itself out as the league moves forward. Basically it's Supply and Demand.. and it's GLORIOUS. Quick note.. ALL games with an actual economy will see fluctuations. There was a time when having 50g in WOW was an achievement in itself. Nowadays you log into your garrison and pickup 10k for doing nothing. It's very simple.
GGG mades 6 socket items more common, they drop more often. Because fusings are buyable with jews at the vendor, the price of the fusings drops. 6Ls are the most needed and wanted items but there is a greater supply of fusing. Chaos is not needed outside of zana' map mods, master craft and chaos spam on rare. The supply is huge. exalt drop rate has not been increased and are still needed for good crafts eternal orb do not drop anymore so we need more exalts, a lot more of them. I MEAN A LOT MORE. Drop rate of high tier unique has increased, their value have dropd. So the value of exalts have increased and the value of unique/6L stuff has decreased. -> exponential devaluation of gear/normal currency and exalt is more valuable because eternal orbs cannot save thousand of exalts. -> increase of the exalt's price by 50% See, it's very simple and logic. I will never be good but always I try to improve. Last edited by Geisalt#1772 on Mar 15, 2016, 3:15:42 AM

Considering I was trying to draw real life comparisons I assumed it was obvious I was talking about the permanent economy, but it still applies to leagues.

" Ah ok, I suppose that's one of the missing pieces, that 6socket drops became buffed and it created a cascading effect for all currencies except for exalts. So it's not any sort of inflation, it's that exalts have actually became much more valuable. It doesn't fully answer why the ratios are continuing to rise since I last played a few months ago, as that was already after the eternal removal. When did the 6socket buff happen? p.s. I didn't specify this part, but I was taking into consideration the many of these changes, but maybe there have been some bigger changes the past couple months I'm ignorant of: " "Dude he fucking said hotdog racist. Also, I noticed the value of items dropping but perhaps not everything has caught up, if poetrade is any indicator.

" Big Bang dialogue is witty, but I wouldn't draw any other inferences from the assessments on that show. Think of the Exalted orb this way - what is the next highest currency, in terms of value? A mirror. Way too rare to be used for trade. What is the next higher currency in terms of rarity? A divine orb - but again these aren't common enough for trade, and don't have the same cache as an exalted orb. The exalted orb is more useful in terms of master mods, so enough of them do get taken out of circulation to cause a rise in price. Once people have great gear, they start accumulating and the price begins to drop again. TLDR - demand and the perception of demand drives the price.
