I would've suggested RuneScape if it didn't turn to utter garbage 4 years ago :P

Yeah i second that. It's really fun. After Path of Exile probably one of the best i've ever played. I had the luck to be there from the start when beta keys were very limited and the way it got better and more polished almost day after day, its great. Mostly when you get to Kingshill and when you are about lvl 10, its great fun and great RPG. Something between Diablo 3 and POE :-D
Graphics are less realistic and less dark than in POE, but still far better than in Diablo 3 (in my opinion) And as far as gameplay, few inovative things, and everything you want from hack'n'slash RPG.

i played many f2p games. most of them are pretty decent (often they had monthly costs before). but i cant play them longer than a month or so. almost always the endgame is a) boring and underdeveloped or b) just fun/competetive with cashshop items.

Games i spent more than an hour in : Champions Online
Apb Reloaded
Cabal Online

League of Legends and Champions Online are the only F2P games I've enjoyed. And TF2, but I paid for that.

The two at the top of my list are:

DDO
LotRO

And then:

CO (Champions Online)
City of Heroes (it's going F2P, or has already done so)

There are a few others I play as well.
