Hey goatz, it's not to gangbang you or anything since i didn't like what anu just said it was quite mean but...


What the hell are you talking about? You won't give it views, yet you know it is a podcast? Seems you have already given it a view count, so why are you saying that?

EDIT: Oh wait i think i understand now, you didn't have attention span to process that stream of consciousness chris let fly there. Was hilarious, all 3 of the streamers were phased out like trying to figure out wtf he was saying.

View count doesn't register until it plays for a certain amount of time, of course I guess I shouldn't assume people know stuff like that but ok.

It literally has nothing to do with what Chris says, I want to hear it, I however won't support anyone that has anything to do with that shitty podcast and their terrible past behaviors.

This discussion derailed quickly...

Still think that Eternals are kind of fine, as long as Mirrors are not there. After listening to the podcast, I see Chris' points though, and think that Eternals are really not needed.

The problem is all the legacy items in Standard. I would love to play in a permanent league that was not so littered with shit as the Standard league is.
Remove Horticrafting station storage limit.
I thought that about Chris' points too Char, but then i thought.. wait.. that doesn't make sense.

Mirrors are much worse in that regard, and because of mirrors there is little interesting picking rares as was one of his arguments against eternals(eternals = u just work on the same rare).

Without mirrors rares would be picked because crafting is often about acquiring good rolled rares and adding those missing rolls, rather than crafting from the base up.

Also mirrors are the ultimate way to make everyone have the same items, as he said about eternals.

Yes, his points are perfectly valid for mirrors, which is why I do not understand why they keep mirrors in the game.

The "good" solution would be to make mirrors clone the item and lock both copies. The mirror crap would still be around in Standard, but it would be less bad. Better solution would be to make a new (optional) permanent league that doesn't have mirrors or where mirrors lock both copies.

Anyway, the intention there was basically, naively, it was initially to help with people trying to get their sockets sorted out. It was a relatively naive thing during development thinking it was mostly going to be for sockets and they were priced really really commonly on our internal server, until people were crafting insane items on our internal server. So we realized it had to be quite a bit rarer than an Exalted Orb and so we implemented it as such and put it into the realm and people were very happy because it let them craft new and exciting things. We didn't receive any negative feedback about this.

Time went on and we started to see what we call rare convergence, the rate at which people make really good rares, was really too high. There are a lot of things we could do to curb rare convergence. We didn't want to take the Eternal away; we liked how it was working and so on. Over time we made some of the mods harder to get, we added more mods to dilute the pool out slightly, and a bunch of stuff we were planning to do anyway to make it difficult to get the highest rares... but Eternals kept relentlessly making it straightforward.

We knew we were probably going to turn these off at some point, but what's the right time for it? We kept not turning them off in each set of challenge leagues, realizing the right time is probably when we introduce Maraketh weapons and the new Tier Zero mods, because that's the point where except for some leftover Eternal Orbs in Standard - and there really aren't all that many, because people would spend them when they got them - assis apart from those existing Eternal Orbs, you could slow down the rate at which people got perfect Maraketh weapons and perfect items with Tier Zero mods on them.

That's why we picked The Awakening as the time to turn off Eternal Orbs, and we're quite happy to return them in the future if they're needed; so far, it looks like they're not.

There were two other things as well.

1. Philosophically, Path of Exile should involve you going through multiple different rare items in order to find the best one. The concept of a single bow and crafting just that one item up to bring perfect isn't really orthogonal to how action RPGs work with their crafting. When you're trying to get the perfect sword in Diablo 2 you have to socket quite a lot of swords. Eternals were really meaning it's all done on one item.

2. While we did consider the interaction between master crafting and Eternal Orbs, it was still too easy. A lot of those master meta-mods reacted really brokenly - by broken I mean in an overpowered way - with Eternal Orbs, and that was putting more wealth in the hands of the players who had the Eternals.
