Misinformation.

Your laptop likely had insufficient cooling.

Application layer software will not cause damage to hardware correctly configured at and below the driver level.

this is not true, it can and it did.
there is a reason why a decent graphics card is half the size of a laptop... my advice is to get a real PC that is designed to play games. laptops just fry your balls and fail at the first sign of any serious software.
All active hardware generates heat as a by-product. That is why expensive hardware comes with a lot of safety checks and measures to prevent damage, e.g. temperature sensors and performance throttles along with cooling devices.

Sorry to burst your bubble OP, but the problem is not PoE's. In fact, I see multiple failures all beyond GGG's control.

1. Your laptop manufacturer caught you in its web by producing a laptop with stats exceeding the physical limits of heat dissipation. (Consumer wants high performance, small size. Hardware manufacturer crams high nominal performance into small size. Temperature goes through the roof, because physics.) Thus...
2. You bought an unsuitably designed laptop for high-end gaming purposes.
3. The safety measures in your laptop failed to protect it, partly because you chose to circumvent them by powering the laptop back up right after it executed an emergency shut down.

So yeah. I feel with you, but the price you have had to pay is chiefly the fault of the laptop manufacturer for building a shitty laptop, and partly also yours because you chose to support their market strategy of beguiling consumers with flashy stats without regard for more important, but less visible criteria such as security and build quality.

Advice?

1. Buy/build a desktop.
2. If you do get a laptop, make sure it's good quality, with plenty of ventilation (= big size). Regularly clear the vents from dust. This may require opening the laptop.
3. If you're more tech-savvy, make sure both cpu and gpu are suitably covered with heat-paste.

As an aside, ATI mobility cards do seem to cause a lot of issues, I'm speaking from experience here, quite possibly more so than their nVidia equivalents. I used to be a laptop gamer before I built my current desktop as well. Never again.

this is so much bullshit this game is badly optimized i could play lol d3 skyrim all without overheating my laptop

few rounds fellshrine bam 95 degree

idle ( browsing and youtube 55 degree) poe ramps it up close to 100

On the one hand, yes, the game is not as optimised as it could be. On the other hand, I think it's hardly fair to compare a completely F2P, indie title to AAA blockbuster B2P titles (nvm LoL)

Also, 55 degrees on idle is far too high to begin with. Points at much more serious issues. When's the last time you took your laptop apart and cleared the vents?

I'd agree with that, i've not yet reached 55oc, this game sits sub 50 at full settings in groups...idle i'm sitting at 25 to 29 in a hot room

Well, you going to compare idle temps to a full blown load? Not really seeing the comparison. Honestly, 55 is high for idle...add in active HD access and massive gfx, and of course, it will start to peak. Heat creates more heat as the ambient temp rises inside the laptop.

In any event, I'll agree PoE isn't very optimized, and this means that things take longer to accomplish, thus increase the gpu load.

For the PC enthusiasts, this was a common problem in certain benchmarks designed for Intel processors, they would take significantly longer on AMD systems, and generate significantly larger amounts of heat because the tests took much longer to complete while at full load.

The bottom line is: if the system can't handle the actual MAX capabilities of the system, then it's design and cooling implementation is second rate.

This is why so many enthusiasts spend good money on processor and GPU cooling (not just liquid, but air as well). It prolongs the life, and gives them the upper hand. Keep in mind, if they didn't need aftermarket coolers, nobody would buy them. They are far more then just a gimmick.
