[fixed] new ssd, godawful latency and stutter (was just crappy internet)
|
edit: it was just my isp/the intawerbs being unusually congested/bad timing, i guess. been silky smooth today (1/2)
so i finally "upgraded" from a slow 7200 rpm hdd to a ssd. game runs like crap. constant lag spikes (latency) and additional freezing/stuttering that doesn't register as latency in the graphs. i guess i'll know more tomorrow (if the DC servers or my internet just momentarily blow) and see if i should run some tests... in the meantime, i thought i'd ask - is it even possible for a ssd to cause latency? (uninstalled game from hdd [is still boot drive], installed game to freshly formatted ssd. utterly craptastic game performance) edit: (i do have much quicker load times. entering a town/hideout/map takes about 1/3 as long as before. this appears to be literally the only gain. performance has dropped dramatically. i often even stutter when approaching/clicking on vendors) [Removed by Support] "Your forum signature was removed as it was considered to be inappropriate and a breach of our Code of Conduct." ...it was quotes. from the forum. lolz! I doubt the SSD is the problem unless there is something else wrong with your system.
You might just be noticing a different issue now that you've removed the HDD bottleneck. Just to verify, you should benchmark your SSD to ensure that the read/write times are what you'd expect for the SSD and not somehow messed up. Compare the times to the same benchmarks on your HDD. |

i already did. the benchmarks are relatively bad for a new ssd... but i think the mobo has sata 2.0 and not 3 (read and write were appx 250 MB/s), which would inhibit the results.
my cpu (amd 2.8 athlon) is definitely the weakest link here... but the terrible latency (and occasional freezing/stuttering that doesn't coincide with lag spikes on the graph) is new. again, it might just be something temporary/coincidental with my isp or the server (and i never heard of a ssd causing latency). if it's bad tomorrow, i'll run some tracer-ts... and maybe ditch the ssd until i get a new mobo/cpu. " If you could run WinMTR while you play and maybe have the latency graph open to screen shot when it's particularly bad it would help. There are several unrelated issues that manifest themselves in a similar way. Lock step with latency spikes cause the game to freeze, can look very similar to asset loading on the fly(think strong boxes/ rogue exiles) With the SSD you should have almost completely eliminated asset loading as a problem, but as you notticed if the rest of the system is old...results may vary. If you go into your BIOS ( be careful in there ) you should be able to access the Sata mode utilized by the mobo. Is it currently set to auto, AHCI, or IDE? ( or even some sort of RAID configuration? )

the bios isn't set to ahci, the mobo only uses ahci for raid.
unless that's actually the culprit (afaik, it shouldn't affect this much, and would only mean that i wouldn't be getting as much performance from the ssd as i should/could be). while the values are comparatively bad for a ssd, they're still much better than the hdd. so while it's performance is far from maximized, i didn't think it would cause problems in-game. i figured it would have to be an improvement, regardless.

![]() ![]() and here's the hdd: ![]() the score is incorrect, i aborted the test after a minute or so when it was clear anyway, after running an arid lake with a summoner tank, i see freezing/stuttering ALL THE TIME. it seems that when i close in on a mob (ie: when it just gets into sight range), the game stutters/freezes. it visually looks like a lag spike, but often no lag spikes or frame time spikes appear in the graph (i am also seeing more/worse latency spikes [and plateaus] than before) upon reaching the boss, the game froze for 4-5 seconds. when it caught up, the boss was dead. it's become unplayable. i can't tell if the ssd is defective or what, but now i can't wait to go back to a slowass hdd. (i bought the ssd after getting sick of dying to 1-2 second frame times upon opening strongboxes or meeting an exile). edit: i didn't run winmtr yet, i'll do that when i try to play again later. also, last night, i noticed that i had a latency spike every time i ran by a strongbox. i took a screenshot (and cropped it, obviously).

Hi There,
192.168.0.1 - 0 | 402 | 402 | 0 | 0 | 14 | 0 | | 96.120.77.49 - 3 | 371 | 363 | 6 | 11 | 68 | 9 | It looks as though you're getting packet loss at the start of your connection, on what appears to be the hop onto your ISP's network. po1.fcr05.sr06.dal01.networklayer.com - 2 | 383 | 378 | 49 | 53 | 93 | 51 | | 14.2c.c0ad.ip4.static.sl-reverse.com - 2 | 387 | 383 | 49 | 52 | 92 | 51 | Given that the packet loss continues throughout the whole trace, it definitely looks like something is going on between your home and ISP that's causing these issues. I'd recommend contacting Comcast to see if they're able to help out with this. | |

hahahahahaha. then i'm doomed.
(i'm in philly. comcast has a literal monopoly on broadband. and they suck/are the worst/don't care/won't even try) thanks, though. i appreciate the quick response. [Removed by Support]

" not neccessarily, sometimes providers secretly change settings in - or the hardware your modem connects to. means, the fault can also be your modem which doesn't work properly under the new conditions, exchanging it or it's settings can also help. but you would also have to ask comcast in this case, do other comcast customers in your area also have problems currently? age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill!
