The south was not victorious and the union was preserved. Whether you consider that during the war, the country was split into two nations (Confederate and Union)is a historical perspective. Vietnam was once considered two nations, but eventually became one again. Many historians do consider that the US was split into two nations during the civil war.

A state of emergency is not necessarily in response to destruction or combustible situations, but a means to secure federal money incase it is needed. Pre-emptive state of emergencies have become very common in republican run states, to the point where state of emergency requests are being denied as frivolous, though that is not the case in the charlotte protests. The state of emergency also allows for national guard to be used, not necessarily because it is needed but just in case, and again I think history is going to show it isn't needed.

Early claims are made because without them being established, getting federal aid or assistance can be delayed. One thing states have painfully learned is that in an emerging situation, the government's wheels often turn to slowly to help in time.

I'd agree that there have been abuses. Between the show of force of the national guard and the lack of further stoking - especially considering the preliminary reports from the family that the Charlotte video is "unclear", it looks as if this incident will die down.

Not sure how you missed it, but my post was entirely about context. The context is that both are/were president. Both are very prominent public people in the highest political office in the country. It doesn't matter who you are., if you are in that office - the opposition is going to use every dirty trick they can. Even the laws on libel and slander recognize a difference for public figures, and a good portion of the reason we have freedom of speech is so that we can criticize those running for or in office, or their policies. Freedom of speech was the first amendment for a reason.

I don't agree with the ugly brawling style of politics. I'd much prefer a return to Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan's style of rhetoric.

That doesn't mean I'm going to find everything Trump says about Hillary to be sexist, nor everything Hillary says about Donald Trump sexist. While they may be sexist out of context, in the race for president, they are just more mud slinging.

I'm sorry, but the mindset that you can treat races unequally is racist. When you treat one race better or worse than another based on race - it is racist.

Are/Were there horrible wrongs committed with racist motivation? Absolutely. They still go on today, and largely they are far more common against minorities. Past wrongs do not justify future wrongs.

I can only imagine if modern day leftists wrote the Constitution:

These people have black privilege, so this video wouldn't even hit the news stations. If this was a group of rednecks beating up a black person there would be riots and the news would play it non-stop for weeks because one video fits the liberal narrative and the other does not.

Those riots were idiotic. A black cop shot a black man that had a firearm on him. To add to the hypocrisy, during the riots a black man also shot another black man. But it's all the white people's fault. And apparently makes looting okay.
