Chin Sol, Traps, and Point Blank
Hey everyone!
So, I've been playing a trap ranger lately, and am looking forward to 2.1. A friend recently got a Chin Sol, and is letting my trapper use it. My question is, how exactly does Chin Sol interact with, say, an Ice Arrow trap socketed into the bow? Also, how does Point Blank, either the support gem or the passive, factor in? Do the bow's bonuses apply at all? Is Point Blank's damage determined by distance from the trap to mobs, or is it still from myself to the mobs? I just want some clarification, so that I can give my friend his bow back if it doesn't work. Also, do we have something like PoEbuilder or PoEmate for browsers yet, that's updated to 2.1? |

If you use traps then you get both point black and chin sol's more dmg multiplier since it hits them at 0 distance.
Was thinking of playing something like this since I am going with a chin'sol build, but I rather play a regular archer instead. https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/996805 The skilltree. |

It's a known combo that was widely used in 1.3 already.
So yes, point blank goes from the damage source, ie. the trap. also chin sol bonus stacks multiplicatively with point blank. I'm not sure if Chin Sol bonus start from trap however, I just suppose though, it would make sense for me. It's easy to test anyway. I theorycrafted such a build (with Rain of Arrows trap + Chin Sol). Main problem was that you lose the ability to scale the damage through attack speed (trap throwing speed is much harder to scale) and you don't have any possibility of life leech or life gain on hit/kill. I'd be thrilled if it worked but I think the damage and survivability just isn't there.

There was a popular build a while back that used the Chin Sol bow with high crit chance Ice Shot (no trap) and high pierce chance for clearing trash and used Puncture + Trap + Point Blank + other damage supports to kill bosses. The combination of the Chin Sol with point blank on a puncture trap and a high crit chance would totally obliterate bosses - especially anything that decided to move around. In fact this was my first build to kill Atziri.

Also keep in mind that the Chin Sol damage bonus for close targets does NOT also have a damage penalty for targets far away like the Point Blank keystone and support gem do. So it's just free extra damage to nearby targets if you have the bow equipped -- handy for finishing off enemies that manage to get in close.
