Lore timeline?
" False. You have Doryani, Atziri and Zerphi first. They destroyed the Vaal Empire. Voll was a total moron, true, but he was responsible for the second cataclysm. I wonder if it'll be a third one... " The details are out there. Start to read between lines. Add a Forsaken Masters questline

" Nice thanks. A few unresolved issues: 1. Seems to be hinted that it was Malachai's plan all along to enter the Beast and claim all the power for himself 2. Not sure what made Dialla change her mind and sacrifice her youth to kill the Beast. Perhaps it was her realisation of Malachai's real plan all along? 3. How did Piety end up in the Beast? |

" Yeah, definitely was Malachai's driving motivation. I imagine that if it wasn't possible to take the power for himself, he would've attempted to kill The Beast though. He's very much the "Go with the flow and seize as much power as possible" type, and until he'd grabbed The Beast's power, Voll was very much the flow. That part confuses me, honestly. Dialla says that she was selfish and didn't want to sacrifice her own Gems to fuel the Device, but Malachai's Diary outside of the device seems to hint that he himself rejected her so that he wouldn't have to kill her. The same way that Shavronne and cohorts went in, I imagine. They were so linked with Gems and Thaumaturgy that Mala-Beast hijacked their souls when they died. Only Kaom and possibly Daresso might gave been able to physically reach the Beast, the other four had confirmed deaths elsewhere. I'd like to know the workings of that last bit myself though. Can Mala-beast yank anyone to live inside? Can he only use people suitably Thamaturged that still have their minds intact? Lots of possibilities, I think~ |

" " Most likely the Vaal were trying to merge with the Beast, or the Beast was created by the majority of the Vaal civilization merging, flesh and soul, into a single being. Dialla was definitely manipulated into her refusal to participate. Whether Malachai truly loved her or callously used her is unclear - his notes suggest the former, while everything else we know about him would tend to imply the latter. She seems to have changed her mind either out of spite or because she realizes the threat Malachai poses. No idea how Piety got inside the Beast, unless it's what Zephryl said. |

She was absorbed after being killed by the exile.

The real question here is: can the Beast revive anyone who's sufficiently steeped in thaumaturgy? And can it revive them only inside itself, or can it bring them back anywhere it wants?
Also, was Malachai ever truly in control of the Beast, or was it controlling him? In other words: when you click "resurrect at checkpoint," is it a mere gameplay conceit or PART OF THE STORY? |
