the beast

edit: you didn't really get my hint when I stated how much more fundamental the story/lore is to Silent Hill...:(

Not really. Explain yourself a little more, my head overlooks subtlety. I'm a simple man.

(I'm feeling I'm starting to repeat myself in this thread, XD)

Okay, so basically, it's a little unfair to ask the same narrative intensity of PoE because it's not as reliant on it as Silent Hill is. So you can't really expect much more than what we get and will get. This wasn't even an issue until act 4 because until that point, the exile's journey was the story, and it was largely made up of interacting with others and their stories. It wasn't what you'd call attached to any sort of existing ancient lore or even a presupposed destiny of said Exile (although the Scion in her earlier and thankfully now gone incarnation sure did her best to destroy that).

It's not about the narrative intensity, it's about mindscrews. Also, I wouldn't say it's the exile fate, it's more like the exile finds awful things and it has to kill them in order to survive (because the exile is hardly heroic, except maybe the templar).

Act 4 pulled serious lore into play, but it's only a quarter (or so) of the content. I imagine if the lore had been so prominent from the start, we'd have more lore in play. Instead it's somewhat subtly scattered about acts 1-3, and then bam, it all comes to a head in act 4. SH, on the other hand, is soaked with its mysteries and its lore from the get-go.

That could be reversed putting a little more intriguing stuff at the beginning, although I would say the Karui carvings are a good start.

I wouldn't read into Beyond btw. That's just the devs having fun with Lovecraftian themes. If Act 5 proves me wrong, I'll eat my hat. :)

I agree that Beyond was mostly something done for the hell of it, but the thing about lovecraft (ish) done well is that makes you wonder about what there is beyond our understanding of reality. That's the reason people read into it, not as a way to understand the main storyline.

Until act 4 we were fine, since we weren't really experiencing the lore, but The Awakening really fails to deliver narrative oomph if you haven't been paying attention to the lore items AND if you haven't read the graphic novel.

Do those and The Awakening is just awesome in its cleverness.

who does even have energy to read the lore ingame? id like it if it was more in the game than just carvings on a stone and a voice telling a story

anyways i was just curious what the beast was, seems its just a large meatball under the ground full of inner organs and eyes and having crystal skin but idk..
Set sail for epic fail

Probably a lot of people, though mostly only the ones who grew up before Twitter or text messages ruined people's ability to read anything more than a couple lines at a time and made people so lazy that they feel the need to abbreviate three letter words all the time...
