Tooltip DPS-Total noober
|
Alright, I'm finally ready to throw my unworthy carcass to the wolves of POE on this one. I read about tooltip dps on the web..."I have 40k tooltip dps" etc. I am assuming that tooltip dps calculates all of your weapons, skills etc. to give you a big picture on your dps vs what you see on the character sheet? Is this correct? When I look into it online I get AHK scripts that show item dps and then a calculator to actually enter all of your character stats into to get dps. I guess my question is what is the best/easiest way to calculate total character tooltip dps? The calculator or some mystical script somewhere? Also, what is the best/most recent AHK script to use for item dps? Thanks in advance for the help, and take it easy on me. I'm a noob :)

People specify "tool tip dps" because it's given in game on your character sheet. It's not even close to accurate, because it can't take into account even half of the variables involved. But it's a standard to use for comparison. So when you say "TTDPS", you're going to use the literal number given to you from the tool tip, even though you know you're not doing it.
"Actual DPS" or "Effective DPS" isn't computed... it's found through experience in game. |

The tooltip is an illusion, exile.

tooltip is a nice guideline but it's rarely accurate about your true dps. tooltip dps varies heavily based on the skill.
ex: my flameblast has 1100 tooltip dps which doesn't take into account that the ability can be charged for 10 stages and will ignite my enemy for tons of damage almost 100% of the time. it doesn't take into account passives like celestial punishment, nor does it account for elemental equilibrium and curses. because of this my buddy's 20k sheet dps ice crash does less damage than my flameblast despite reading as almost 20 times higher. Right... this isn't about accuracy. It's about comparison.
A TTDPS of 18k on IceCrash is likely going to do less damage than a 20k TTDPS on Icecrash. But once you start comparing different skills with the same measure, you're going to lose any basis for comparison. That's why people specify that they're talking about "tool tip" when they talk DPS. |

Thanks, I guess I need to work on my dps :O
Do any of you use AHK scripts for item dps? Any tips on a good one? |

I don't know of any. We don't have combat logs which those usually scan for "real" information. Best you could do with PoE is have an alternative to the manner in which GGG has chosen to approximate the actual DPS which will likely be equally as bad.

" I dont know about any PoE dps calculators, but this community has a tendency to give online tools that can be helpful (like the aura reservation calculator, the exp penalty calculator, online trees) so I guess that a quick goole searck may come up with something. Also you can calculate it by yourself if you have the time. Most of the info you may want about the effective damage you will deal to an enemy can be found on the wiki. |

IMO the best way to calculate out your edps is to pick a build with reliable ttdps and kill a boss like dominus stage two, who has a decent sized health pool and doesn't move around much. that will give you a baseline for what his health is. then to calculate dps for other builds you can just time your runs against stages 2 dominus and determine your edps from there.

I use good ole fashioned math. I'll admit to using windows calculator as well.
