That's where the extra socket bug happened, and whenever the abyss jewel sockets have been added they've replaced that, probably because they're not counted as normal sockets.. No, Gnarled Branch is a low level staff that can only have a maximum of 3 sockets no matter what (it's a 4x1 sized item in inventory).
