how much health points do I need against malachai merciless

the title says it all. I just defeated Malachai on normal, had 1700hp and my life got to half pretty frequently(the fight was REALLY scary and tense). Is it enough to have 180% increased maximum life as a bow ranger?
Death zerg'ing him is much faster... and Merciless is optional. You'll only have to suffer through Cruel...

'Faster' as you'll not have to over-level heavily, and will not have to do the specific kinds of builds that can actually do him.

@Cyzax
Sorry, didn't get the point of what you said. How much hp should I have at least? I don't want to get one shot by him, I wonder how much increased maximum life % I need from the tree.

It entirely depends on your build... many builds are not really able to do him even if they can do all other content up to that point (and after).

'Death zerging' is when you run in, do as much damage as possible, die, resurrect, jump back in, repeat until he is dead.

If you actually want to do him, you need a good build, good equipment, and probably need to have over-levelled quite a bit. You'll probably still die...

I just death zerg him and get it over with...

Not really an option if he is an HC player. Can't say though because his account has no characters.
He probably plays under a different account.

@OP : What are the specifics of your build? What defenses skills and passives does your archer have? What does your gear look like?

Have you removed Asus ROG/GameFirst yet?
@MaxTheLimit
I'm running a puncture/split arrow build. Yes, I'm playing hardcore. I created a thread here https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1339834 asking if it's better to have crit chance or raw physical damage for that type of build. No answer yet :(. If I have just physical damage I can get up to 250% increased maximum life(going to scion/marauder area), but if I chose to get critical strike chance I can only get up to 180% increased maximum life. Defense is basically elemental resist from gear and nodes, and life. Evasion and armor comes from gear only(well, a little bit from passives regarding armor if i get to marauder area, otherwise just a little evasion from tree).

EDIT
a little bit off topic, warlord's mark progession doesn't match path of exile's gamepedia. It says level 6 warlord's mark should have 5.5% life leech and 4.5 mana leech, but it only has 2% on both.

bump
I killed him with a flame totem build in beta before he got nerfed...probably I was one of the first players who beat him without death.

Was killed by him around 25-30 times when I started my crit nova build on league. I mean what shoud a guy do ihad to stand still to deal damage. Imho they pushed out the last part of act4 before they were ready, I mean what feedback can u give someone just in 3 days. They commited themself to a timeframe they couldnt hold up to.
I personally absolutly hate act4, iam glad never to see that shit again when I reached merc. Same goes for maps, I killed myself on Desert while I could beat a lvl 74 Piety, I mean wtf
@Fresszelle

So you don't need to fight him on merc? Interesting. I'm still waiting for someone to give me a heads up on how much hp I should have against him on cruel/merciless so that I can avoid being one shotted. Considering hp alone, that is. Just ignore armor, I had almost 0 when I fought him with my ranger with 1700hp. I just want to know how much I need to aim for. As in, is 180% increased maximum hp + life from armor enough? Or do I need more from the tree, say 250%(that's the most I can get, but I don't want to over invest on hp if I don't need to).
Considering hp alone, that is.

Thats the point of it he wont 1-shot u if u dont stay in his Groundbreakin aura. No hp will safe u from that one. Problem is if u have to doge everything he throws at u, u dont have time to deal dps. I played for 3 mins with the nova build he still was over 90%. In the second stage he regenarates when the hearts are up, makes it even worse. The totem build beat him because I just cast them in the middle of the room and ran around, the totems would deal dps while I was doging. Same goes with firestorm, doesent mmatter where I would cast it it would still hit him...harder then totems but ;)

Long story short take a build that gives u dps while doging, range attack/spell/flame totem are the easiest. respec into the build u want to play after cruel there is imho no close range build that could beat him without having a crapload of luck or a guilde supporting u with gear
