Act 4 Cruel - Malachai Fight - one shot
Character: PappelGray - level 84
3.326 hit points; fire resistance: 76%; cold/lightning resistance: 75%; chaos resistance: -28% 20% damage reduction from critical strikes (Unyielding) Notable Node. Fortify, skill gem, was up and running. Could be misinformed, listing all resistances, being told that Malachai deals physical and fire damage. Latency throughout the fight: 20-40 ms. At some point during the second stage, first phase, Malachia raised his club for the "will-beat-the-living-snot-out-of-you" attack. Since PappelGray has withstood multiple attacks of that type on cruel, he stood his ground. One Strike, One Death. After the last patch, and the corresponding changes to that particular event, and helping several people past this, this surprised me. This post is about getting feedback on the question, is what happened supposed to be possible on cruel or not? Regards, Gray. Bosses can crit as well can't they?
I had variable damage from that attack as well as some from Piety before him. I feel like it really comes down to will he crit or won't he. I could be wrong...but that's what the damage spikes "feel" like. EDIT: THat is nuts, however, that his was a level 84 in Cruel and still took that kind of damage. Path of Life! @ Prisus
It is my understanding that a lot of monsters, even bosses do critical hits and damage. Hence: 20% damage reduction from critical strikes (Unyielding) Notable Node. Most times all works fine, but now and then PappelGray suffers massive one-shot damage episodes. Some of those, i am really at a loss to explain. It feels like a buddy of mine once formulated. I'm not at all surprised that a cruel malachai slam one-shot you through 3k hp. That sounds pretty typical based on my own experience and many forum accounts.

I took 3.5k through fortify on cruel (and survived). It's bad, but soakable in a worse case scenario if you build/gear for it.

It seems we need to nerf critical chances, both on players and on monsters.
How about lowering base critical chance of weapons and skills, for both players and monsters, from about 5.0% into about 1.0%? Of course every player build, except Resolute Technique, will have their damage output lowered by far less frequent criticals but this also affects monsters too, so malachai may still crit but not too frequently. (This is mostly based on lifeleech/manaleech nerfs values) |

Couple hours ago I went to cruel to practice malachai mechanics with my Marauder cyclone2h 80lvl char. 5k hp, tons of armor. His underground teleport oneshotted me in second phase :)

Same thing happened to me. I'm not sure I have ever had so tanky a character in my life (at that level). I had ~3500 armor, ~50% phys mitigation, 75+ to each elemental resistance, ~0 chaos (ie. not negative). Got one shot when Malachai moved across the room. I didn't even realize he was underground, and in fact I don't think I saw the attack that killed me fully animate (but I can't really say). The fight was sketchy until then, but I didn't even have a chance to pot. What makes it worse is that I was lvl 64, so experience in cruel was getting really slow.
Love PoE and enjoy hardcore. I think I will keep away from the latter until I can get to Merciless without having to buy a kill. No point in rerolling since I can't reasonably make a character tankier (especially with how much damage you need to have to chew through on Malachai). Am definitely not going to play flame totem just to get to merc. Also, Piety's laser was doing crazy damage to me, despite my high armor and elemental resistances. Is that unclassed damage? chaos? @ mjk78
Thank You. Totally forgot this. Fortify, skill gem, was up and running, too (first post edited to reflect that). @ PHRandom Well, since PappelGray is a straight Resolute Technique and (supposed tank build), my damage output isn't that high anyways.
