I'm still confused about the whole life leech change

I don't see the problem. Check how much leech was the norm for VP back then, multiply with 0,4 and you will get how much leech you need right now. If the norm isn't enough for you - get more, if you can't get the norm - settle on leeching less than before, not much else you can do.
