A file name extension is a set of characters added to the end of a file name that determine which program should open it. For more information, see File names and file name extensions: frequently asked questions.

Windows hides file name extensions, but you can choose to make them visible.

To show or hide file name extensions

Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.

Click the View tab, and then, under Advanced settings, do one of the following:

To show file name extensions, clear the Hide extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK.

To hide file name extensions, select the Hide extensions for known file types check box, and then click OK.
I just want to say thank you.I was having this very problem and am all set.

I had no problem whatso ever in beta with filters but I changed my hard drive the other day and changed my OS.I was losing my mind till I saw this post...Thanks again
I have tried everything and I still can't get it to show in UI settings. It is weird because when I was playing the beta I did not have this issue with the filter being in the UI settings. I guess I just will go back to no filters.
Same here
I too have the game installed via steam and do not have the production_config or Config.ini file and as such am unable to use filters.
For those who don't know where to put it, it's not the game folder/steam folder it a folder here C:\Users\****\Documents\My Games\Path of Exile.

And could you please post pics of where you have the file on your PC...maybe hover over the file so we can see the file type like this
