[Advice] When to start trading ?

Hello !

I ran through normal with my Witch (lvl 40) and my Scion (lvl 42).

I accumulated quite a bit of rare items (lvl 40-45) with decent stats (+1 lvl to socked gems i.e.) and 3 Uniques, so I was wondering: When is the best time to start digging in the trading system of the game ?

I would like to know if it's better to advance in Cruel before doing so or if I should buy my Scion Gear right on (+2 Minion/Fire gem for SRS and Flameblast i.e.)

Thank you.
Most start in about merciless, so the 50s or so. It's not until mapping in the 60s and 70s that you can actually start making money. Also, I'm guessing you're playing in standard, which can be very difficult to trade in. The reason for that is its a very old league, 3-4 years or so, and because of that has the accumulated drops of all that time. Even temporary leagues' items go there. I would personally suggest playing in the 1 month race, as it will be very fun and easy to trade. The reason for this is items that are worth nothing and are trash in standard can easily be worth quite a bit in the race and other temporary league.

Then again, this is just my viewpoint that the temporary leagues are better. There are still players who play on the permanent leagues as well.
Sure, the lab can be hard, but it's pretty easy if you're properly geared, and not terrible at the game.
You can start early.
Buy gems required for your build early. Common gems can be had for Alts, Jews or Fusings. Even the more in-demand ones don't go for more than a few chaos. Make smart purchases to shore up your resistances and so on. Low-level 5L's are usually quite cheap, especially in older leagues, and are a great power boost to your main skill. Don't invest too much into gear you're going to replace anyway.

Leveling gems in your weapon swap will pay off if you can get the gems to level 20. They'll either be gems you'll use eventually or ones you intend to sell. So starting on that earlier is better than waiting until later. You'll have to be smart about what you'll pick. Since it's easier to sell gems that popular builds will use (e.g. Purity of Fire) or is otherwise going to be used almost universally (e.g. Empower).

Assume most rares and uniques are crap, unless there's something special about them. Get to a level where building the chaos orb recipe is possible. That's also where all the "big finds" will happen, but don't count on it. Figure out how to build currencies. Alts, Jewelers, Chroms, Fusings and Chaos Orbs.

When selling items, have a clear price in mind. Don't waste my time with "offer." Don't be coy. You'll sell more quickly if you just tell people what you want instead of beating around the bush.

You should start trading when you have enough knowledge of how the market works so that you know how to trade fairly.

Most of these early game items you talked about probably no one would take them even if you us free.
I say it depends on your needs. If there's any problems making it difficult to progress (havent upgraded your weapon in awhile, really bad resists, ect) then you might want to spend a few of your currency items. Otherwise, it's wisest to save them for when you get to around level 60 where gear will last you a bit longer.

Thank you for all the replies !

I think that I'll just buy a new staff since my current one is crappy (I have it since level 1...) and after that I'll keep leveling until I find myself stuck or lvl 50-60 (whichever happens first).

As for trading, do you recommend using the Trade-chan or poe.trade ?
We recommend poe.xyz.

really you guys wait that long until you buy or sell your first item(s)?? i'm surprised to say the least. how do you lot manage that long without upgrades??

with my first charachter in a fresh league:

i always tend to finish normal mode then clear the beach and reach the town in cruel act 1. i will be around lvl 30 and at that point my resistances are always too low in the 20-30s at best and i need to start picking up better gear. also i won't have enough links for my gems or the gems i need so i need to pick that up too.

i usually have a few orbs i can use to buy some stuff that brings my resists up to 75 and atleast one 4-link for my main skill. if i am playing a melee charachter i also need to keep my weapon updated. if i am playing a caster i tend to use the vendor recipe for a +1 wand that has a 3-link for my preferred setup which i will use until i get another better weapon or save up for a 5-link somewhere late in merciless. depends how much luck i have with currency drops and trades.

Here is basically what i have found after finishing normal mode. It's more than enough to buy some cheap gear.

Absolutely fine. In the large scheme of things, that's not a lot of currency. I focus more on getting gems which are integral to my build than on gear, but whatever suits you needs.

You can wing it without resists, but life does get more comfortable with than without.
Only start trading for real at 65-ish entering maps.
