Instructions for How to setup a loot filter

Instructions for getting a loot filter to work
Step 1: Go to: \My Documents\My Games\Path of Exile

Step 2: Create a text file with the name you want your Filter to have. When you Save this file, be sure to select 'Save As' and set the file type to "All Files (*.*)". Then save the file as: filtername.filter
It should look like this if done correctly:

If you cannot change your file extension, this may help.

Step 3: Go to the in-game Options menu and click on the UI tab. You should see this new option, located at the very bottom of the list:

If your Filter is not a .filter file, or it is not located in the same folder as your awakeningbeta_Config.ini file, you won't see this option.

Clicking 'Reload' will display this message if the Filter is working correctly:

Nifty knick knacks the filter can do it?

These are some of the functions the filter can perform.

Show
Hide
PlayAlertSound (1-9)
SetTextColor (rgb)
SetBorderColor (rgb)
SetBackgroundColor (rgba)
SetFontSize (30-44)

ItemLevel (1-100)
DropLevel (1-100)
BaseType (ALL items types)
Rarity (Normal, Magic, Rare, Unique)
Class (Item group; Currency, Map, Flask, Body, etc)
LinkedSockets (0-6)
Quality (0-20)
Sockets (0-6)
Height (1-4)
Width (1-2)

My filter is not working, what do I do?

Make sure your filter file is located in the same folder as your awakeningbeta_Config.ini file.
If it is, then you need to make sure you've actually created a 'filter' file, and not a 'text' file with '.filter' in the name.
To check this, right-click the filter and click Properties, if the file type is 'text', you did not change the file extension correctly. To enable the ability to change a file extension, this may help.

Do you have non-ASCII characters in your username?

Appreciate this post, but on your step 3, when I go to my Options/UI I do not have that "List of Item Filters" choice. I've tried it both before and after placing a .filter text file in the appropriate location.

Any thoughts?

Edit: I finally got a filter file to "take" after playing around a bit (and continuing to reload client). Note you can have a FILTER file type with both uppercase and lowercase "F"...but only lower case gets pulled through by the PoE client. I'll leave this here as both proof of my idiocy and in case others run into the same problem.

Restart the game after creating the .filter file.

The only thing I can think of is that there was some kind of issue in step 2 (I was hung up on this for about an hour sorting out changing the extension of a file). Does the file type show up as a filter when you look at the file type (you can also see this if you look at the properties of the file)?

Yeah, I played with file saving and reloading awhile too. Finally got a file to "take". Note my edit above.

Thanks for your response!

I created my item filter in notepad. When I was saving it, under "Save as type" it defaults to text document (.txt), I changed it to all files and saved the item filter as itemfilter1.filter and had no issues.
Yep, this worked flawlessly for me. I used all lowercase for the extension.
