"The "one month's salary" thing was started by a successful advertising campaign by De Beers Group - the major sellers of diamonds (clearly they weren't biased at all). Since then it seems to have expanded as people took that as a baseline and wanted to show off more, anything form 1-3 seems to be recommended today from what I can see. I consider this all bullshit, made up by the people selling you the expensive diamonds to guilt you into paying way too much for them - because, well, it is. As you said earlier in the thread, the gesture should be what's important, not the price tag. | |

There are soooooo many gorgeous gemstones in the world. Diamonds are pretty fucking boring, all things considered. If it's what you both prefer, go for it, but.....there are SO many lovely options!

" That's all well and good. Ford and GM bought up bus-lines and commuter cars/train companies to tear them up and force people to buy cars. Should I never buy a car because they were clearly biased in their "marketing" tactics? " That's a very different scenario Wretch. Cars are just about a necessity these days. I know I couldn't do what I need to do without one. Diamonds, unless you're into high-end construction or other limited uses, are a purely luxury item. Besides, if you wanted to not buy from GM and Ford because of that, you're more than welcome to try Chrysler, Toyota, Hyundai, Honda, Volkswagen, Saab, Volvo, Mitsubishi, or any of the other numerous choices for buying a car. DeBeers controls like 40% of the diamond market, they used to control about 85%. DeBeers's douchery is well documented. Support a free Hong Kong. " I'd just link her to the same video. 4 minutes of her time vs $4000 " No, because a car still has intrinsic value/utility if your daily life requires that you get from point-A to Point-B within a specific time frame. Unless a train station suddenly springs up in your area, you're still dependent on an automobile of some sort for transportation. Diamonds, while used in certain industrial applications, are worthless to the average Joe. Of course, some people will surely argue that diamonds are aesthetically pleasing, like a fine piece of art. But that's an entirely different argument than you were presenting. ✮ in-game @FTMFW ✮ twitch.tv/RRTSON ✮ [Shop] http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/909223 ✮ [Build of the Week] http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1034503 Last edited by rrtson#7791 on Apr 18, 2015, 10:46:54 PM

Yes, you guys are right. Its not the same thing. My point was that it doesn't matter how things became the norm. I personally would need a better excuse than De Beers made me do it.

See, tactically, you introduce her to the conspiracy early in the relationship, and bring it up casually every so often to further ingrain the idea by the time you actually want to propose.
