That's a very different scenario Wretch. Cars are just about a necessity these days. I know I couldn't do what I need to do without one. Diamonds, unless you're into high-end construction or other limited uses, are a purely luxury item.

Besides, if you wanted to not buy from GM and Ford because of that, you're more than welcome to try Chrysler, Toyota, Hyundai, Honda, Volkswagen, Saab, Volvo, Mitsubishi, or any of the other numerous choices for buying a car.

DeBeers controls like 40% of the diamond market, they used to control about 85%. DeBeers's douchery is well documented.

No, because a car still has intrinsic value/utility if your daily life requires that you get from point-A to Point-B within a specific time frame. Unless a train station suddenly springs up in your area, you're still dependent on an automobile of some sort for transportation. Diamonds, while used in certain industrial applications, are worthless to the average Joe.

Of course, some people will surely argue that diamonds are aesthetically pleasing, like a fine piece of art. But that's an entirely different argument than you were presenting.

Yes, you guys are right. Its not the same thing. My point was that it doesn't matter how things became the norm. I personally would need a better excuse than De Beers made me do it.
