It'd be great to have f.e. 2 new inventory slots for a special bandoliers (1 connected to belt + 1 extra chest belt with implied bandolier on it). Sounds kinda chaotic. I'll explain.
It'd be possible to drop bandolier (white item only, cannot be upgraded to magic/rare/unique or just a small enchantment)
1 bandolier box would contain 4 squares of extra inventory space.

|x||x| (helmet/gloves/boots size)
extra chest bandolier would contain 6 squares of extra inventory space.

Let me show you picture with my idea:

Why? Inventory will never be big enough anyways.

What drawbacks would this confer? Slower movement speed?

I think you meant "/trolled". Badly at that.
I do mean slower.

I think that items that give extra inventory slots don't add something interesting to the game. Every player is going to have that extra inventory space, so why not simply give the extra space rather than itemize it?

Because, as an item, it can be equipped or left out. This way players can decide if they want it or not.
If it is itemized, it can have drawbacks. The item gives slower movement speed or something.
If it is just added as extra inventory space, the item is not needed and shouldn't be itemized. This should be the case if no drawback is intended.
