If you put a Wolf (or any other big, ferocious dog) against a ferocious Lion or Tiger, big dogs are technically inferior in strength vs. big cats, and big dogs are also inferior to big cats in cleverness.

Furthermore, pet cats (because they are more independent) are also easier to maintain vs. pet dogs that, in many cases, require much more maintenance, much more attention, and much more money because many pet dogs love to tear your yard and other things apart in your house, and that is not always due to poor training. I have seen dogs that have had all the discipline in the world that still tear things apart.

Therefore, the only thing pet household dogs have over pet household cats is their sense of smell, and in most cases (not all cases) true loyalty since there are times certain pet household dogs can turn against their owners, which can be a lot more dangerous than a pet household cat turning against their owner that just hiss, run away, and mind their own business.

And as for comparing playfulness between dogs and cats: dogs are trained in certain ways to do tricks, in other words, taught how to play (and listen to their owners a bit more), whereas cats are more themselves and amusing when in their playful state of mind and do not have to be taught to play.

Cats are naturals, whereas dogs have to be commanded. That is why I favor cats over dogs.
