How exactly does Glacial Hammer work?

I think on a southpaw build, the tooltip correctly takes account of the fact that all the damage is coming from one weapon, but it's erroneous when it comes to attack speed (the speed of the non-swinging hand is irrelevant).
Perhaps, but I did the math a while ago and the difference was pretty damn big, which lead me to believe it was attack as well. I might be wrong I guess.

You made me go back to Standard to pull up my old GH character:

Melee Physical damage tooltip DPS: 7500

Weapon Elemental Damage: 7900

Keep in mind the actual DPS numbers are much higher because the game is behaving as though I'm attacking with my off-hand (which I'm not because it's not a mace). resist reduction further multiplies the damage by at least 1.35. Also the gems I used were level 1 because I couldn't be bothered to find two equally leveled gems.

Level 1 MPD and WED will favor elemental damage since WED starts with a bigger multiplier. Then there's also the amount of increased damage, so what you did has proven nothing.

Increased Physical damage is far easier to come by, as it is present in things like Melee Splash, strength, quite a few passive nodes, and more. Yet elemental/cold damage is much harder to come by, and leech even harder than that.
It proves my original point (which you contested): That there are circumstances where you can't have both MPD and WED, and WED provides more DPS.

Like when? When you favor Faster Attacks over MPD? That's for on-hit effects, not damage. If you want to maximize damage, MPD and WED are must-haves.

And no, if you had read my post MPD adds far more than WED does, and not just in damage.
