most basic builds are the first gems that the characters acquire. right? thats why they are supplied as the first gems.

I think the question has more to do with the R16 rating of the game.

B.

it would be much better if you focus on either a bow or a melee weapon, so you can get the most out of your passives.

Bow:
- Tornado Shot / Split Arrow = mob groups
- Puncture / Burning Arrow = single target/boss


also, it you are a tad bit new to the game, get a decoy totem or a conversion trap.
