They mute them to stop them being able to post in general/trade so that others cannot see the "offensive" name - when the name is changed, if that was the major bone of contention for the mute, it's usually lifted early.

I added an edit to my response, which if this is common practice for muting (offensive names) does the player receive a notice to change their name?

And in defense, anal doesnt necessarily mean 'sodomy'. ...although I do bet that's it means in this case lol

u can often read that some mods/gms abuse their power....his name isnt the best choice but i dont see a reason to mute sum1 coz of name.
he was in team with gm and he didnt get muted, only after he said "sounds like a setup" that is really strange.

problem is that the mods also represent the game, the company and the community....

That's a horrible analogy. You go to porn forums to jack off, so of course it's ridiculous if you get banned for that. I'm hoping you're not the type to visit an art museum and jack off to all the naked ladies in paintings, and that'd be fine and not offensive just because there are naked butts. There's a specific art direction/style that the developers had a vision for, so they went with it - the nudity in this game is not for the sake of nudity, the devs did not go "hurrr butts n tits", it's to fulfill the mature, dark and gritty atmosphere that a game revolving around a bunch of exiles has. That's exactly in the scope of why, for instance, there are a lack of pants, armor looks pretty worn out etc.

Seriously though, for names it's not even hard. If you even have to question whether this name is offensive or not, it most likely is..
