Your stash is shared inside league (including races) so you transfer gems through it.
As for how it goes:
1.Create both chars before race
2.Start race as mule
3.Kill hillock, put stuff to stash
4.Relog onto your planned race char

Cool, thanks for that info. I was wondering earlier how the almost all of the folks who finished high up the ladder managed to get two really useful skill gems early in the race.
